My 15-year-old cat's jaw cyst has blood. Why is this a bad sign?

This might need to be removed surgically, the best way to find out is to take her to the vet, they will aspirate a small sample with a syringe and needle from the lump, then they will send it to the lab to find out if the tumor is cancerous or benign. if it is cancerous it will need to be removed for sure, but even if it is benign, due to the symptom it causes, your vet might advise surgical removal.

Given Simba's age, I would be very concerned that this lump may be a malignant tumor. Because antibiotics and steroids haven't help, I would recommend having blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) done on the lump. To do an FNA, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. These tests may hopefully help diagnose the cause of the lump. Once the cause is found, the vet can discuss treatment options.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Cats are very well known for having a mouth tumor called squamous cell carcinoma which carries a poor prognosis. However, it could still be something else. The only way to know is by doing some sampling via fine needle aspiration or possibly a biopsy. If squamous cell carcinoma is confirmed, it is not likely to respond to medications much other than mild decrease in inflammation. Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is limited by how aggressive this tumor is though sometimes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are options. Sorry for the sad news. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. It is possible that it is a tumor, and could possibly be infected. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They may recommend antibiotics and possibly removal. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Your suspicions are right. This is a skin mass unfortunately. Due to the color, I would recommend having Nanni seen by your vet and the mass sampled to see if this is cancerous or benign (non-cancerous). Hopefully it is not cancerous and we can just monitor it. But if it does end up being cancerous (after viewing the cells that make up the mass microscopically), then removal of the mass can be discussed with your vet.
