Why is my cat itchy with sores on new diet food? Vet says keep it.

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 22 lbs

My cat was recently seen by a vet and prescribed a new food. Its a diet food as he was overweight. Since the new food (about 7 weeks now), he's been having sores and itchy skin. Last weekend they have him a steroid injection, but have advised to keep him on the same food. He's very sore, lethargic and the sores are raw and getting worse. Why am I being told to keep feeding him this food? The new food was the only differential and this is his first adverse reaction to anything. I need help pls

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry to hear about Finn.

It does seem a but suspicious that he may be allergic to something in the new food. Personally I would recommend going back to his original food until his skin is back to normal then choose a different food to try and help manage his weight. Sometimes we have to choose the lesser of 2 evils!

Good luck!
