My cats have itchy ears, scratching wounds. Is it contagious?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor kittens! Until you get a diagnosis from your Vet I can't answer you on if it is transmittable ti humans. You may also have different diseases in your country than we do in the US. Possible causes of the skin condition are: fleas (people can get bitten), allergies to food or environment (not contagious), demodex (mites not contagious to people) or ring worm which is a fungal skin infection (is contagious to people). Fleas are easy to fix. Allergies are frustrating and can take a while to find the medication and food that works. Demedex is relatively easy to fix. Ring worm can take a long time and oral medications and lyme sulfur dips. I hope this helps and your Vet will be able to get you the diagnosis. I wish you and the kittens the best!

This does not look like mange, however this could be a fungal infection or a bacterial infection or overgrooming in a spot where the cat experiences pain. You should schedule an appointment with a veterinarian for a skin exam. If it is a fungal infection (ringworm) it would be contagious. to other pets as well as humans.

Hello, sorry to hear about Honey. I would be more concerned with the yellow scabs being indicative of an ear infection, bacterial or yeast. However, unless ruled out with diagnostics, we cannot say that Honey is not carrying anything infectious that could be transmitted to humans. If your mouth was in direct contact with Honey, or if you happened to pet honey and then touched around your mouth, and if she happened to be carrying something infectious, then there's a chance you may have gotten something from her. The best way to rule out that she has anything you should worry about is by having your veterinarian assess her and run some skin diagnostics which may include a fungal culture, a skin scrape, and looking at skin debris and cells under the microscope. Things that you can contract from your cat include ring worm infections and paraste infections. Schedule an appointment to have your veterinarian take a look at your cat and speak to your physician about the rash your developed. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Poor kittens! These lesions could be a result of injuries from playing and subsequent infection/abscess formation, ringworm, or mange. If you feel adventurous, you can carefully try to use clippers to clip the fur around these lesions on both kittens and then clean the areas with an antiseptic solution, such as dilute chlorhexidine or dilute betadine. However, both kittens will likely need to go to the vet for further evaluation to determine if diagnostic testing and/or oral antibiotics are necessary. If the kittens are scratching at themselves, be sure that they are wearing e-collars (cones) to prevent further skin damage. I hope that all goes well!

This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection or traumatic lesions, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Simsim evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Simsim wear gloves when handling these lesions. Good luck and best wishes!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). These areas on the skin look very suspicious of a ringworm infection or bacterial infection. Ms Pussington needs to be seen by a vet to get this looked at and treated. This won't respond to any at home treatment unfortunately. I would recommend scheduling an appt soon for her. In the meantime you can try cleaning the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to provide a topical antiseptic clean. Nothing else should be placed on these wounds. She will likely need a skin scrape/cytology to identify the underlying pathogen and then treatment based on what the cause is. I hope she feels better soon.
