Looking for an internal medicine specialist vet for my pet's health?

Unfortunately I cannot contact you outside this site :-( My recommendation is to have your vet contact a vet at a vet school in the US for guidance and help with the surgery. Vets will consult with other vets for help with surgeries, and many vet are willing to provide this help. That way, your vet gets one on one help. Best of luck!

Hello, sorry to hear about Ike. Glucose curves are helpful to determine how effective the treatment for diabetes is. Unfortunately, there isn't one prescription that treats all pets equally as different pets need different doses or even different types of insulin to control their blood sugar. Its likely that Ike just hasn't reached a well controlled point. However, you can always discuss with your veterinarian about obtaining a referral to see a specialist in internal medicine whom manage complicated medicine cases like Ike's may be. Besides diabetes, there are other diseases which may make the successful treatment of diabetes challanging and include things such as cushings disease. Usually a veterinarian who is interested in clinical rabbit medicine can be employed both in rabbits farms and general practice. Usually a basic knowledge of dogs and cats medicine is needed as well. Being a vet is not an easy job (in all fields), as requires commitment and passion. It can be very rewarding though.

I have always loved animals, and knew from the time I was little that I wanted to look after them. 2. Yes, I have two dogs (a Basset Hound and a Chow Chow), and four cats. 3. The best thing about being a vet is being able to help make sick animals healthy again. 4. If you get a pet, you have to be prepared to pay for their veterinary care. Pets needs regular care, just like humans, and should be vaccinated, treated for fleas, intestinal worms, and heartworms. Pets need to be looked after, and when they are sick, they have to see a vet.

It sounds like your vet is very worried about Jake and is recommending a referral to help figure this out as quickly as possible. Family vets are able to run some base line tests, as you describe above, but your pup likely needs some additional diagnostics that a specialist (likely an internal medicine specialist) can provide. They would be looking for causes of extreme weight loss, dehydration, diarrhea, the obstruction event you report, and any other symptoms you report at home. Your vet is right that there are many things this could be and some cases are complicated by more then one problem. A specialist will review all the tests performed, perform a thorough physical exam, and discuss with you what tests are recommended next to get this figured out for Jake.
