When should I consider humane euthanasia for my suffering cat?

Hello. Honestly, waiting for Chloe to pass naturally can be a rough, painful & a distressing way to go. You just said you do not want her to suffer I would definitely have your veterinarian evaluate her to see if there is anything reasonable that can be done to help her. Perhaps she is a little dehydrated & just needs some subcutaneous fluids. If not, she should be allowed to go peacefully surrounded by the people that she loves. She will be sedated so that when her final moments come, there is no stress with her or you. This is the most humane way to allow Chloe to move on with dignity. There might be some things available to ease her discomfort for a while longer, but only you & your veterinarian can decide if this is the right time to let her go. Yes unfortunatley in cases where a diabetic cat is not able to be medicated and maintain hydration, euthanasia is the best option. The fact she has other complicating factors reducing her mobility and causing her discomfort means this may be very soon to prevent suffering. It is such a hard decision to make! I work for a home euthanasia service, so I face this question with my clients all the time. I recommend looking at Pete's quality of life in order to make this decision. When a cat stops eating, is very lethargic, has trouble breathing, or just wants to sleep all the time, that is a sign their quality of life has decreased to a point where letting them go should be considered. Poor Molly! From what you're describing here, it sounds like she was extremely sick. In my experience, when a cat is not eating, feeling poorly, and not responding to supportive care for several days, the problem is generally not treatable and euthanasia is the kindest option. I would look at G's quality of life in make the decision as to when to euthanize him. If he's in pain, losing weight, having diarrhea, detached, and head pressing, his quality of life isn't very good. When a cat is in constant pain, they will be suffering daily, and in my opinion, that is when it is time to let them go peacefully. It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet, and they are often ready to go before we are ready to let them go.
