Why does my spayed cat howl at night when we turn off lights?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

My 3 year old spayed cat Athena has started howling at night. It happens only after my boyfriend and I are in bed and turn off the lights. If we go to bed at different times she waits. No daytime behavioral changes but she does tend to make the same sound during the day as well but rarely. She doesn't appear to be in pain and she doesn't seem to have any tender or uncomfortable spots when petting her. Her eating and drinking habits are good as well as a normal litter box. Should I be concerned?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Athena. Sometimes increased vocalizations especially at night can be a sign of disease known as hyperthyroidism. Other signs include increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, hyperactivity, weight loss and intermittent vomiting and diarrhea. If any of these other signs sound familiar, I recommend have her tested by her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
