How to holistically help a cat with loud breathing, snoring, wheezing?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Our cat had a history of abuse for the first (approx) 5 years of her life, before we adopted her. She is underweight by about 65% for her breed. She’s a ragdoll and weighs just under 5 pounds. We think this early malnourishment has contributed to respiratory issues for her. Most of the time, her breathing is audible, and when she’s sleeping, she loudly snores. When playing, her breathing turns raspy. At times when eating, she pauses for 20 sec and wheezes. we’d like holistic ideas to help her!

Seek out a veterinarian who does acupuncture. Many cats actually tolerate it very well and it can be extremely helpful for chronic upper respiratory issues such as snoring. If she has a bacterial upper respiratory infection, antibiotics may be needed, but it sounds like she probably has some underlying respiratory issues as well. That's where I think the acupuncture could benefit. Also, keep a humidifier going in your home; increased moisture in the air may help as well.
