What is this hole on my cat's rear? Is it a growth or injury?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs

We just noticed our cat has a hole in his rear. No idea where or when he got it, or how. Im going to see if the vet had an opening for him tomorrow. He hasn't shown any signs of being injured, no limping, nothing. My husband says they'll probably do a cone with antibiotics because they cant stitch it. Any advice on what it could possibly be?

There is a possibility that this skin defect can be closed but that depends on an examination and if it makes sense clinically. This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
