Why is one of my cats suddenly hissing and growling at the other?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 15 lbs

I have two cats. One I got when he was 2 months and a year later I got a cat that was 2 years old. At first I had to keep them in separate rooms until I was able to introduce them to one another without the aggression that was first experienced. Now a year in, one of my cats suddenly is hissing and growling at the other cat. Nothing has changed around the house and no visits to the vet were made by either prior to this. I’m confused as to what the problem is and how to address this.

I'm sorry you are facing this frustrating problem. I would recommend that you take the one who is suddenly being "grumpy" to the vet. Sometimes if they are painful or not feeling well, they will become more irritable. You can try temporarily separating them again, or separating them for at least part of the day so that the "victim" has a "safe zone" or some time where he or she feels safe. But the sudden onset of the change in behavior does concern me that something may be going on with the one who is acting more aggressive.
Best of luck, thank you for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
