Is it safe to get a guinea pig if I already have a cat at home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 7.055 lbs

I am thinking of getting a guinea pig and im worried as to how id welcome it and how it would adapt with my cat around. Im afraid it'll be scared and i heard guinea pigs need a lot of attention and if theyre alone they might die and if i will him this guinea pig ill only be getting one not two.

Attention is less of a problem with guinea pigs, they will definitely not die because of that. the main problem will be the cat though, this is usually not a great match, unless your cat will not be bothered by the guinea pig at all. at least in the beginning i recommend putting the guinea pig's cage in a room where the cat cannot access.
