My cat won't brush. Is finger rubbing gums effective for gingivitis?

Rubbing very hard could increase irritation to the gums, but I think it would be somewhat difficult to do this - Moo would probably get upset and not allow it! If you are seeing blood on the gauze this could simply be a sign of gingivitis that should hopefully improve with routine dental care. If you are unsure whether or not you are finger brushing the right way you could potentially schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have a technician/nurse show you the proper way to use the gauze.

Brushing his teeth while he still has the excessive tartar will not remove it and also hurt the gums, as the gingivitis is painful. Yes this would work just be careful not to get bitten! There are other alternatives too that you can try to help with oral hygiene if tooth brushing is proving to be a problem. You can get a seaweed extract to add to the food daily called plaque off. There is also aquadent which is a bit like a mouth wash that you add to their water for them to drink. My favourite option is hills TD food as this has both a mechanical and chemical action to break down the calculi and improve oral hygiene and hopefully prevent dental work.

Red gums indicate an infection in the mouth. This is actually more problematic than tartar accumulating on the teeth. Gingivitis leads to bad breath and a destruction of the attachment of the teeth. You can try dipping the finger brush in tuna water before rubbing it on your cat's teeth to make the experience more pleasant. That may make Lily more willing to open her mouth. I would also cradle her from behind, cup her chin, and lift up her lip to clean her teeth.
