My cat got Frontline spot-on, but I still see fleas. How long does it take to work?

This medication should kill all the fleas within two days of use. If it's not, then I would check to make sure you gave the right dose, gave it properly and did not give a bath soon after applying ( should not bathe for at-least a week after applying). If the flea you combed-out was dead, then all is good. If not, then wait a day, or two and see if there are any live ones. The medication will kill any flea that jumps on her for the next month. However, there is a concern with the fleas reproducing in the environment. Treating for fleas is not just restricted to the host, because fleas do reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, you may in about 5-6 days. However, I would highly recommend you use a stronger and likely more efficacious product. There are plenty of flea products in the market and a lot of them are very effective. I prefer Bravecto and Frontline plus. You can pick one of those products. The nice thing about Bravecto is that it is very effective and it is only applied once every 3 months. You can also use a product called Capstar along with one of the previously mentioned products which can help kill a lot of fleas at once. Remember to vacuum all the surfaces that have contact with your pup regularly. This is very likely going to work well. Good luck and have a great day!

Hello. First, no product for fleas is 100% effective. Bravecto is one of my favorites, but we must accept that there will be some breakthrough occasionally. Also, a flea does need to feed in order to die, so it is no wonder that you saw blood in the flea. Nothing we have in the fight against fleas prevents them from jumping on a pet. From there, either they die after feeding, or in the case of something like Frontline, the flea dies when coming in contact with the coat. But a flea can still bite as it is dying. I'm sorry you are having such problems with fleas! I have personally found, as have a number of my colleagues, that there is resistance to Frontline and pets continue to have problems with them despite applying the Frontline. I will give you the flea treatment program I typically recommend and have found to be very effective. First, I would give Shadow Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment, this is very important. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. You may have to flea bomb the house a few times to kill all the fleas. My brother had a problem with fleas in his home, and the exterminator had to visit three times before they were all gone. I hope this helps!

The effipro will not work immediately, you can give a Capstar which will kill all adult fleas on Stella within 30 mins. You can purchase this at any Petco Pet supply stores. This can be given even if the pet is on a monthly preventative. Combing should not have removed the treatment as long as you are applying it correctly, directly on the skin. They put a lot of liquid in those vials, so it's impossible not to get any in the fur. If in 2 weeks you are still finding fleas, you can apply another dose of the effipro. If by next month, the fleas remain a problem you may need to consider changing to another flea preventative. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Stella!

I'm so sorry you are having a hard time with Boogie! Capstar is safe to give daily, but ONLY kills adult fleas. More fleas will be jumping onto Boogie daily until all of the viable eggs in the environment have hatched or been rid of. Frontline (and Advantage and Revolution) kills adult fleas AND makes the eggs laid by the fleas that are on the dog unable to hatch once they are in the environment. That's why it takes some time to see results, whether you are using Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. That is also why Capstar continues to be beneficial in killing the adults that are on the dog. Think of it this way. Adults fleas get onto the dog. They eat, mate, poop, and lay eggs. The poop from the fleas, and the eggs, both drop off into the environment. When the eggs hatch out, which takes 2 weeks, the larvae (baby fleas) feed on the flea poop that was dropped into the environment. They ultimately develop into the adult fleas that will again find an adult host to infect. Since an adult flea can lay 50 eggs a day, you can see how important it is to treat the environment and break the life cycle. Until you've got better control, apply either Frontline (or Advantage, or Revolution) as frequently as recommended by your vet; typically this will be about 2 week intervals for 4-8 weeks. Frontline will kill fleas within 24 hours and ticks within 48 hours. To be safe, you should also treat all your cats as well. A majority of a flea population lives off the pet, only hopping on to feed. A flea treatment and prevention program will include treatment of the pet and the environment. Use a preventative for at least 3 consecutive months, preferably year round.
