What cat food do you recommend for an obese cat with constipation?

Oh my, Kitty is a very handsome boy! I love his socks on his feet, so cute. Feeding him canned food watered down is an excellent way to get him to lose weight. Canned food has lower calories than dry kibble, and the added benefit is that it will get extra moisture into his diet hopefully preventing any further occurrences of constipation. Dehydration is the number one cause of constipation in cats. Do not feed him any treats, and try to play with him at least once a day to get him moving. At his age, he certainly won't be running around like a kitten, but movement will be good for him. I hope this helps!

There are many different diets to try for constipation. Hill's i/d is a highly digestible food that might result in less stool produced and help with constipation. Other foods like Royal Canin fiber response help increase the fiber in the stool, and sometimes canned high protein diets are recommended. Constipation generally occurs secondary to another disease process in cats like renal disease or megacolon, so the ultimate diagnosis might also influence what food was recommended. It would be a good idea to get full medical records and talk to your veterinarian at home about long term management once you are back in the country.

Thanks for trying to be proactive about Fici's health! It's a shame you cannot get the Metabolic diet shipped to you as this diet is great for weight loss. An Alternative for Fici is Royal Canin Weight Control. I'd recommend feeding an all canned diet as this is more likely to help with weight loss than dry foods. If you cannot find any prescription diets then another type of canned food may still help with weight loss. It is the Science Diet metabolic weight management diet. If you wish to not use a weight loss diet then any of the Science Diet foods for adult cats would be great for him. I recommend changing his diet to a specialized weight management diet such as hills metabolic so he can feel full and receive all the necessary nutrition to be healthy, whilst still losing and then maintaining weight. Mist vets offices provide free weight clinics to monitor and advise on feeding such diets and maintaining health and fitness

In my clinical experience high fibre food is most effective in managing chronic constipation in cats. You will find many brands of high-fiber food for cats on the market. You could try Royal Canine Gastrointestinal Fibre Response, Iams Proactive Health or Hill's Indoor With High Fiber. You would have to wait about 4-8 weeks on high-fiber food to see improvement. Since constipation issues are directed at increasing water content and fiber, I would recommend sticking with the canned Purina urinary food and then adding in fiber daily with 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin or Metamucil. Also have him checked with your vet if there is ever a time he can't go at all because he may have a condition called megacolon (enlarged colon) which would require medicaiton to treat.
