First time flying with cat: How to reduce stress and carrier anxiety?

Pet's info: Cat | Devon Rex | Female | spayed | 8 months and 13 days old | 6 lbs

I'll be flying on a plane with my cat for the first time in a couple days. Any advice to make the trip less stressful for her (she hates being in the carrier even for a 15-minute drive)? Should I give her something so she sleeps during the trip? Should I stop giving her food and water a couple hours before the trip to avoid accidents in her carrier? I'll take all the advice you've got! Thanks!!

I know how you feel. I just flew with 5 of my own pets for a flight that was over 7 hrs. So you are a bit limited here, but there are some safe things you can do to ease the stress for Moka.
1) No sedatives- these are not safe and also not permitted due to the vast temperature ranges that your fur baby can be exposed to. Also if she is going in cargo pressure changes can make her at risk for serious injury if she is on any type of sedative/tranquilizer.
2) Stress reducing natural remedies- there are lots of options here at your local pet store. Get an associate to help you find some that will work for you.
3) Place a clothing item with your scent on it in the carrier with her
4) Don't stop giving her food or water for any period of time. You want her well hydrated and well fed. Most cats won't eat much in transit, so letting her eat is a good idea.
5) Place a pee pad or towel at the bottom of the carrier in case of accidents. You will be surprised to know that most cats hold their urine and feces well during transit, unless of course Moka has a diagnosed separation anxiety condition, in which case she may have an accident or two.
6) Relax- your pet picks up on your mood! So if you are stressed, she will be stressed! Just relax and things will be just fine.

Ginger should be examined by the veterinarian prior to the flight to check her heart and blood pressure. She will likely need a health certificate and vaccine update (if due). If she is prone to stress, sedatives/anti-anxiety medications may help. In general, the over the counter options don't tend to be effective (though you can try them). Your veterinarian will have proven medications that work. It is also recommend to have a trial run at home a few days before your flight so you know how Ginger responds to them. What can I do to prevent my cat from getting stressed when moving?

Moving can be a stressful time for both cats and people. Some cats begin to experience stress when the first box is packed. Try to keep this time as normal as possible for your cat by continuing a normal daily routine and avoid packing your cat’s bed, cat tree, and toys until the last minute. Calming pheromone products, such as the Comfort Zone® Calming Diffuser or Comfort Zone® Spray and Scratch Control Spray, may minimize some of this stress. When moving day arrives, be sure that your cat is safely secured in a cat carrier before the door opens and boxes start leaving. Some of the calming supplements and thunder shirts have had some success with travel and could be tried. I recommend trying them weeks before travel just in case they don't work so different options can be tried. Continuing in acclimating your pet to the crate is a good idea. Try making it a safe place for your pet with toys, treats, favorite blanket, etc Lastly you should follow your airlines' guidelines on last feeding/watering. It can vary depending on flight lengths, layovers, etc.

I have clients who move abroad all the time and take their pets. Depending on where you move, the requirements can be extensive. Make sure you start investigating what needs to be done many months prior to the move and you should be fine. Cats usually travel well if they are well-adjusted to the carrier and you have plenty of time to work on that.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I would ask your Veterinarian for an oral sedative for you to give 2 hours before travel. I would use the Feliway spray in his carriage. Once you arrive at your new home, he should be kept in a room by himself away from the other animals for a week then use a baby gate at the door for the him to see and greet the other cat and dog. Do that for a week, then remove the gate. be sure he has access to this room to run away if he needs to. This room can be your bedroom. Use the Feliway diffuser in this room.
