My cat has fleas, Sentry failed. What's a fast, safe flea treatment?

Since both Sentry and Frontline use the same active ingredient (fipronil) it is unlikely that you will see better protection switching to the Frontline. You will need to choose a product with a different ingredient, like Advantage or Revolution or a Seresto collar. If you choose to use another topical, I would recommend bathing your kitty today to remove any remnants of the Sentry, and wait 3 days to apply the next topical. It is important to wait after bathing so that the natural body oils have time to coat the skin to ensure adequate absorption. You do not need to wait or bathe to use a Seresto collar.

If you want an effective product please use one of newer ones like Cheristin. I don't think you will get any better results with Advantage. Hartz has been around for a very long time and it not likely as effective anymore as some of the other brands out there. You can try giving Capstar which is kills adult fleas within 30 mins and lasts for 24 hours and then following up with once monthly Advantage II for cats (over the counter) or once monthly Revolution which is a prescription flea preventative. Keeping Jackie on year round flea preventative is recommended even for indoor cats. I hope this helps and thanks again for your post!

To be sure that you have done everything that can be done to prevent infestation of your other pet, I would recommend using a flea fogger from Lowe's or Home Depot to kill all the fleas that can hide in the cracks of your sofa and carpet. You will need ot evacuate all the pets from the home during the treatmnet, as instructed ont he canister. I wuld also recommend the next treatment of flea prevenation to be a higher quality flea preventative than Sentry. Sentry is a low quality flea preventative unfortunately. I only recommend the following for quality flea preventatives: 1) Revolution 2) Cheristin 3) Advantage 4) Comfortis I hope that you get rid of these fleas for good and protetct your other cat from getting them. YOu can also give your older cat a Capstar right before doing the flea fogger to really guarantee that she/he is flea free. Yes, Sentry products are not recommended. If you need flea prevention you should get it from your vet. My recommendation would be to try and wash off that medication ASAP. Use Dawn dishsoap to wash the cats since it will cut through the oils in the skin. Be sure to rinse them thoroughly and dry them with towels (not hair dryers). If they start showing any other symptoms, especially neurologic symptoms, they need to get to a vet as an emergency. Hope this helps. Sorry this happened. Best wishes.

Yes, you can give Aries Capstar in addition to the topical Sentry medication. Be sure to continue applying topical flea prevention monthly in order to break the flea lifecycle. When he is due for the next dose of medication, I would recommend using a higher quality (both safer and more effective) flea preventative, such as Advantage, Revolution, or Bravecto. If you have any other dogs or cats in the house, be sure to treat all pets with good quality flea prevention. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Fleas can be very frustrating to deal with! In my experience, Hartz products and other over-the-counter options like flea shampoos, diatomaceous earth, etc. are not very effective. First, I would recommend getting good quality prescription flea medication from your vet for Darwin and your two cats - you won't have any luck getting rid of the fleas in the house until all of the animals area treated. Nexgard or Bravecto are the best choices for dogs, and Revolution or Advantage Multi would be best for the cats. Once that's done, you can treat your house and yard with a premises spray like Knock Off to get rid of the fleas and eggs in the environment. If the problem is severe, you may need to have an exterminator come and treat the environment professionally. Keeping all of your pets on a good quality flea control medication year-around in the future will help to prevent this from being an issue again.
