My cat has fishy breath. Are there home remedies without toothpaste?

My cat’s breath smells fishy. Are there home remedies to this? I can’t buy pet toothpaste right now because of the lockdown :(

Unfortunately there is not much that will help with the bad breath and dental disease at home. There are many solutions on line that you can formulate yourself but I always caution pet owners that any of these can cause GI upset and lead to vomiting / diarrhea. Some formulations that you will find online can be toxic as well. So stay away from the natural home remedies. If you are able to order from an online store, I would recommend an enzymatic toothpaste such as CET oral enzymatic toothpaste. You can also start Tartar Shield Cat Treats and can also find these online. Once the lockdown is over, I would recommend having Darcy's mouth looked at to be sure there is no infection in the mouth. If he he has pain he should be seen by a vet to rule out damaged teeth or a broken jaw which requires repair or extraction - brushing will not solve this. I would also recommend using a pet toothpaste or dental hygiene gel as these are more effective and also better accepted as they are flavoured.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bad breath could be a sign of a bad tooth. Smelling like fish could be Iayl licking his anal glands (sacs inside the rectum). If these glands get full or infected, cats will lick the area. I recommend taking Iayl to the vet for an exam of his mouth and anal glands. He may need to have a dental cleaning or have the glands expressed. Good luck!

I have also seen pieces of food become lodged in between teeth and as bacteria cling to the piece of food that is stuck in the mouth, it can cause quite the odor. My cat's breath smells bad. How can I brush her teeth properly?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snowy. If she has smelly breath, then she likely has an infection in her mouth causing dental disease. If so, she will need to go under anesthesia to have her teeth cleaned by her veterinarian. Afterwards brushing will be less painful to her. Start slowly and use a toothpaste formulated for animals. Start by offering the paste on your finger as a treat. Once she likes it, then slowly start brushing. You can use a small toothbrush or a finger brush. I hope this information helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dusty. Gingivitis and an infection under the gumline can recur as quickly as 14 days after having the teeth professionally cleaned under surgery. To combat this problem, he will need at home care. Some cats will allow you to brush the teeth. Others simply will not tolerate it. There are dental treats that are available. There is also a dental gel called Maxi-guard that works very well. I hope this give you some options to help with his breath. Great job being attentive to his oral health! The best way to help this problem is to brush his teeth every day. The stimulation of the gums that happens when brushing will help with the inflammation. You must use a toothpaste made for animals. I don't know what products you have available to you in Tunisia so it's hard for me to make any recommendations.
