My spayed cat fell, won't eat or drink with her cone. Is she okay?

Occasionally they will act "off" for a day or 2 following anesthesia, and a lot of cats really hate wearing a cone. (though you should keep in on her!) The combination of everything you mention could lead to her being a bit cranky. And the walking backwards and falling over is probably from the cone. Take it off for a few minutes and watch her move around to ensure she walks normally without it. If she continues to be stumbling/clumsy/abnormal gait with the cone off, then take her to your vet for an exam. But If she is eating some (even if its less than normal), give her some space. Let her have her own isolated area... a small bathroom, laundry room, etc, with food, water, litter box, and some comfy beds and or boxes she might like. She should be acting more like herself over the next few days. If at any point she is becoming increasingly lethargic, she starts vomiting, she is completely anorexic (not eating anything at all for more than 24 hours), then take her to your vet right away. Additionally, subcutaneous fluids (fluids under the skin) may be beneficial. Wet food will provide her some moisture so continue to offer it to her. I hope this information helps!

It is normal that a kitten will be quieter than usual after a spay. It is an abdominal surgery, and it's important that she does stay as quiet as possible so she can heal correctly. Wearing an Ecollar can also lead them to be quieter than normal, as cats do not like them and act resigned to wearing them. As long as she eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about her but you can mention your concern with your vet at the appointment tomorrow. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Your Billy should be able to get up and walk a few hours after the surgery. She may be slow and quiet on the day of the surgery, but on the following day she should be active and playful. You do not have to change her diet but you do need to put a head cone on her. She should not be allowed to go out until the wound is fully healed. Depending on the suturing technique, you may have to take her back to your vets in about 10 days time to remove the stitches.

While you can see a decrease in appetite and potentially drinking after a spay, her appetite should have been back to normal or close to normal by now. It's very serious she hasn't eaten or drank in 48 hours, and that suggests something is quite wrong. I would take her into a vet immediately, as she may have a post-surgical complication. A cone on a cat can be a little stressful for them, and they can react by hiding, sleeping more, and refusing treats. She will eat when she is hungry, however, and just give her some time and space. She will adjust to the cone, but if she does stop eating altogether, you can take her cone off at mealtimes so she will eat. Be sure to watch her the whole time to make sure she doesn't lick at her bottom, and put it right back on when she's done eating.

Because Lily is eating wet food, she is getting moisture into her system through that. If she won't drink water, I would offer her more wet food to increase her hydration. She likely is having trouble drinking water with the cone on. Put the water in a similar bowl to the one she is eating out of, as she can clearly eat with the cone on from that bowl. Be sure to keep the cone on her because she will rip out her drains if she has access to them. To keep it on her, you can use a cat collar strung through the loops of Ecollar to prevent her from taking it off.
