Can my cat get feline herpes from a friend's owner visiting?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 8 lbs

A close friend of mine recently got a kitten with herpes and I’m concerned about how easily they can transfer their cats disease to mine. I’ve read that the owner can spread it without the cats meeting and that they must wash their hands. But I’m not sure of how careful I need to be about the owner interacting with my pet.

The virus does not last long on it's own in the environment. It needs moisture to survive, so once it dries it dies. It would be much easier to contract it through direct contact with an infected cat or objects used by that cat, namely food or water bowls.
Hand washing after handling an infected cat and before handling yours should be sufficient to prevent spread.
