Should I worry about my cat's fast breathing resting or sleeping?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 8.6 lbs

Ever since I adopted my kitten almost a year and a half ago (she'll be 2 in May), I've noticed her fast-breathing at all times, even at rest or sleeping. At her year checkup, I DID ask the vet, but she didn't seem concerned. Am I just looking for trouble? Thanks for considering this... Maida Jones

I would make sure she is not purring while she is breathing fast since sometimes purring can make it seem like they are breathing fast when they are in reality not.

If you are concerned with how Rosebud is breathing I would start with X-rays to rule out lung disease. If the X-rays are clear and it is not lung related the next step is an ultrasound of her heart.

Cats can have heart problems without having a heart murmur. If everything is clear then I wouldn't worry to much but without diagnostics it is hard to say if it is something to be concerned about or not.

In cats and young animals it is very hard when they are awake as they are sniffing and in cats they purr. I would count his breathing the next time he is in a deep sleep and not purring. I think he is likely fine. He is a young cat and as long as he isn't coughing (sounds like a hair ball) or open mouth panting I think things are fine. if you are still concerned then I would have your Vet examine him. Why is my cat's chest moving fast when she's resting? Is it normal?

Yes it is normal for you to be able to see her chest rise and fall as she breathes but she shouldn't be breathing fast. Usually when resting they will have a respiratory rate of less that 20 breaths per minute. You can count this by counting each rise in her chest over a minute. If she is breathing rapidly or open mouth breathing then there is likely something seriously wrong like a respiratory infection or heart problem. And I would advise you to seek medical attention as soon as possible. I hope this helps.

Hi there, Increased respiratory rates in cats can be due to stress, lung disease, asthma, fever as well as other diseases. Since this happens daily, I would recommend taking Milo in for a chest x-ray to see what's going on and go from there. My cat is breathing fast while nursing kittens. Should I worry?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Fast respiration is a common finding in nursing cats, particularly with the first litter. If Lily is nursing the kittens well, is eating and drinking and acting as normal, you should just monitor her at home. However, if she goes off food and becomes lethargic you should take her to your local vets for an appointment. In that case, she should be checked for fever, mastitis, uterine infection, which could cause increase in respiratory rate in feeding cats.

Her breathing should have stabilized by now, and this can be an indication of a problem. She is a young cat, but it could be she has a problem with her heart causing this breathing problem. Before you get upset, keep in mind that it's summer in Italy where you live, and she may be breathing really fast due to the heat. Keep her in a cool, dark room.
