Cat scratching face, hair loss, hotspots after switching to raw diet?

An itchy face and neck is typical for food allergies in cats. Besides this he coulld also have a problem with the shampoo and/or an ear infection since he is shaking his head. I suggest you take Coyote to your veterinarian for an exam. If the itching started when you started to transition him to the new food, immediately stop feeding the new food and put him back on his old food. If the itching then stops over the next week or two, then he is definitely allergic or oversensitive to the new food and must not be given that. But I do think a vet visit is in order to rule out any other cause.

Poor Remington! It looks like Remington has a bit of a skin infection. The patch on his face appears to be superficial moist dermatitis (commonly called a "hot spot"). These skin infections are generally secondary to the dog scratching from something else. I would make sure you used a high product flea prevention (many over-the-counter options don't work very well). I prefer the oral options such as Bravecto and Nexgard, but there are many reputable topical products such as Advantix, Frontline, or Revolution as well. The scratching could also be due to allergies or (with the sore on his face) an ear infection, so I recommend having Remington seen by a vet to help determine what is causing the scratching in the first place, and to get him started on the appropriate treatment. He will likely need a course of antibiotics to clear up his skin. In the meantime, keep all of those areas clean and dry. You may gently clean them with warm soapy water (Dawn dish soap works well), then pat them thoroughly dry with a clean towel. Hope this helps.

What you are describing sound like a possible allergy. It can be from something in the food or something in the environment or her own immune system just being weaker than the others. It can be known as military dermatitis. I would consult your vet about a treatment as there is medicine to stop the itching and some antibiotics to clear the related bacterial infection

This could be a food allergy, but I think it’s more likely an environmental allergy or hypersensitivity (to fleas most likely). Especially if Raider was on the same food for several months with no problem. (If you just switched food, flavor, or treats within 3 weeks of this happening, I am more suspicious of food allergy.) Both of those foods are, as far as I can tell, reputable and of good quality. If you’d like to pursue the food option, choose a “novel protein” meaning, if his previous foods have been mostly chicken and beef, choose a fish, duck, or lamb recipe. If you haven’t already, get the fleas under control and obviously you know to see a vet if it’s not getting better. A medicated shampoo, short course of steroids, and antibiotics if needed might be possible treatments (though there are many others). Best of luck to you and Raider.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Based on its appearance, that resembles a hot spot, or a moist-dermatitis brought about by licking. If it is at the base of the tail, this is a common place for cats to have a flea allergy/infection. I recommend having Baloo seen by a veterinarian who can perform a skin scrape test/cytology to see if there is evidence of secondary bacterial infection and/or other types of external parasites, such as fleas or mites. Baloo will need to wear an Elizabethan collar so that he does not continue to lick at this area and cause further trauma. He will also need to be on monthly topical flea and tick preventatives, purchased from your veterinarian. Flea and tick products that are available in food and pet stores are NOT effective OR safe for use on cats or dogs. I hope this is helpful!

I'm sorry but no photo was provided other than a photo of your question. Was there supposed to be a photo of the cat? I think you need to give her more time. If she really has a food allergy and the itchiness has reduced on the rabbit raw diet and it has only been 3 weeks, you need to continue as you have been and give it at least 6-8 weeks to work. Be sure you are not feeding her anything else but her diet - no treats, human foods, etc or that may cause a flare up and will ruin your food trial. If after the 6-8 weeks she is still very itchy then you need to speak to your vet about allergy testing. This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites.

 First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, high quality flea treatment is given. It sounded like your veterinarian has done it already. The next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.

 Food can be indeed one the most common cause of it. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to stop the chewing and repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics usually). 

There is also a nice topical spray available, it's called Cortavance and you can get it at the vets.

 Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider starting on a long term allergy treatment.
