My cat has eczema-like rash on leg, keeps licking. What to do?

Hi, I think one of the first conditions to rule out here would be eosinophilic granuloma complex (EGC) which refers to a group of inflammatory skin problems in cats. The skin lesion on the picture may be an eosinophilic plaque. Common sites are the hind legs and the stomach. The lesions can be large and may be itchy, and the cat may frequently tries to licks and even bites at the affected site which can make it worse. Most cases of ECG are due to allergies ( fleas /food/ atopy=environmental). Flea control is very important in the treatment. Most cases respond well to medical treatment with corticosteroids (prednisolone commonly) and antibiotic if infected. She will need to be checked by a vet to confirm and to be treated. Smores seems like the area is bothering her. Many things can cause these bumps including allergies, external parasites or ringworm (which people can get). Make an appointment with her doctor to get her checked out. There are medications the doctor can give her to stop the itching as well as treat the underlying cause. If you have an elizabethan collar for her, go ahead and put it on her. The licking can make the lesions worse. Make sure that you are also using a reputable flea product. I recommend Revolution or Comfortis.

Hi there. So sorry that Pitir is having this issue. It looks to me like she may have a form of Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex - the eosinophilic plaques. This is a very complex syndrome and it is not as simple as just giving a cortisone injection. That will placate the symptoms for a while but will does not address the underlying problem. My best advice is for you to take her to a veterinary dermatologist and get the testing done to get first the proper diagnosis and then to get the proper treatment to hopefully prevent future flare-ups. Chances are you will not cure her 100% (if she does have what I think she has). However, you can likely minimize her flare-ups significantly once you figure out what the underlying problem is. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! The black hairless area is a normal elbow callus. The pink area could be a growth or irritation or a skin infection. I would prevent the licking by using an E-collar. Then I would apply a triple antibiotic cream. Force him to lay on soft bedding to prevent further trauma and you can try an antihistamine. If there is no improvement the area should be looked at by a Vet as he may need oral antibiotics and a steroid or apoquel. This looks very inflamed indeed, probably infected as well. i would actually suspect a condition called Eosinophylic Granuloma that is quite common in cats and can look like this, if this is the case Boston will need steroid treatment for a few weeks and probably a course of antibiotic as well. i strongly advise that you take him to the vet ASAP in order to get treatment.

Hey there, Sorry to see about Kovu licking himself obsessively. I can see that he has really made his skin very inflamed. A somewhat common problem in cats called Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex (EGC) comes to mind when I see this photo, specifically because the middles and backs of his hind legs are affected. If this is the cause, it likely has nothing to do with his seizure disorder or phenobarbital. These lesions can easily develop secondary bacterial infections though, which may require antibiotics. Tackling EGC often involves a bit of trial and error to figure out what works best for each cat. Some cats only ever break out once or twice in their lives, and some cats need to have a special hypoallergenic diet, consistent flea control, and allergy medications throughout their whole lives. It is generally something that can be managed well once it is under control. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. She does have a very large open wound that does require therapy and warrants veterinary evaluation as soon as possible. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!
