My cat's ear has a dry, smelly clump. Should I clean it or see a vet?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria but fungal infections are possible as well). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). Poor Spookette! It sounds like she may have a pretty bad ear infection. Ear infections can be due to mites, bacteria, or yeast in cats. I'd recommend scheduling an examination with a veterinarian so Spookette can have her ears checked out. A swab can be taken from the ears and evaluated under the microscope to determine if the cause is mites, bacteria, or yeast. She will likely need prescription ear medication to treat. Hello. This is definitely a very irritated ear, but your veterinarian really needs to see what is going on in the ear canal to make an actual diagnosis. The vomiting should be unrelated to what is going on in the ear, but Cafe could have more than one issue at a time. With having an ear this possibly infected, & vomiting, you really need to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Without knowing exactly what is medically going on with the ear & why she is vomiting, there really is not much you can do for her at home. I do hope you can have her seen soon. Yes you should take Lani to your veterinarian for an exam. You are doing a good job with your care but I don’t like the look of that red area in the ear from the picture. They will check to see if there’s something in the ear causing the problem and can treat the growth and ear infection. She could have a mass that will need to be removed. Owie, it looks like your kitty has a cat bite abscess in her ear. Almost all cat bites are infected, so this is not unusual. The location is rather unusual. Maggots are gross, however in this case I think they helped clean the wound. Maggots are often used in human medicine to clean out infected wounds, so this is a tried and tested method, albeit, in your kitty's case not originally intended. This is all you can do for tonight. You did na nice job cleaning the wound and I see it is quite swollen, so now the swelling needs to go down. That might take a few days. Your vet will likely prescribe an antibiotic to keep the wound from festering again. If you have an e-collar at home, you could put that on your kitty to keep her from scratching the wound, however I suspect she will leave the wound alone anyway.
