Why is my cat scratching his red, hard ear with dark discharge?

Lucky is such a cutie! The open sores could be due from scratching from the fleas as well as scratching at his ears. The ear discharge indicates an ear infection, which can be caused by ear mites, bacteria, or yeast. Keep in mind as well that flea shampoo will not prevent the fleas, and he needs to be a flea prevention program to keep him from getting fleas again. I would have Lucky seen by a vet today. The sores may be infected from the scratching, he needs the cause of his ear discharge diagnosed and treated, and the vet can start him on a flea prevention program. He will also need vaccines. Please bring him into a vet today, it's important to have any ear problem examined and treated promptly because leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss.

It is difficult to diagnose an ear infection without examining the discharge under a microscope to see if there are any bacteria, yeast, or mites. Based on the pictures, it does not appear to be a large amount of discharge. There aren't any OTC ear medications for infections but you could clean the ear with just an ear cleaner labeled for cats and see if that helps. Clean three times a week for now and then once weekly and see if that gets rid of all the discharge. If not, he really needs to go to a vet for treatment.

This could be an indication of infection (bacterial, fungal, mites). She would need to be physically examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. A swab of the ear can be examined under a microscope in the clinic to make the diagnosis. The appropriate medication or treatment can then be dispensed or administered. IN the meantime, place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent excessive scratching or rubbing.

It is possible that Motu may have a bacterial and /or yeast infection of the ear. It is also possible, but less likely that he has been reinfected with ear mites. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Do not clean the ear so that your veterinarian had debris present to assist in making the diagnosis.
