Why is my cat's ear bent, scabbed, and losing fur around the edges?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old

My cats right ear tip has bent backwards, there feels like there is a scab on the back of his ear where it has folder and he has now started to show thinning fur around the edge of his ear at the front. He has only been an outdoor cat for about 2 months so far. He is 1 year and 9 months old. Neutered and receiving monthly flea medicine.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The scab could be a self-inflicted wound if Yamcha has been scratching the ear excessively. It often happens with ear canal infections. It could be reaction to sun - cats can get sun burns, which most often affects ears. You can try using sunscreen on the ears to see if it is going to help ( you can buy sunscreen for cats Online). Finally, there are some diseases affecting the tip of the ear (usually auto-immune diseases) but they are very uncommon in cats.

Poor Kitty Bear! I would be concerned that she may have ear tip vasculitis that affects the blood flow to the tips of the ears and can result in crusts and ulcerative wounds. It looks like a scab might have fallen off. It is common for cats to over-itch this part of their head near the ears when they have ear mites, ear infection, or other sources of itchiness. It is difficult to diagnose without actually seeing the lesion but it could be an infection or possibly a squamous cell carcinoma which is more common in white cats. If your vet is not able to diagnose then you should find another vet in your area that can examine your cat.

My cat's ear is bare and looks dented after a scab. Should I worry?

If the skin isn't red and there isn't a wound then it could appear that the ear is bent due to the hair loss and the asymmetry compared to the other ear. You can post a picture and I'd be happy to look at it. If the ear pinna is dented, it is just cosmetic and won't cause any problems going forward. Once the hair grows back it might not even be noticeable. I hope this helps!

My cat is losing fur on ears and nose with scabs, why is this happening?

I would be really suspicious of ringworm. Although there could be other causes as well such as stick tight fleas, frost bite, infections, etc. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. My cat's ears are sore, inflamed, and scabby. What could be wrong?

Sammy could have ear infections, insect bites, sunburn, or even early cancer. Without knowing what the causes is it is difficult to say what treatment you could try. If it's due to insect bites then keeping him indoors and away from any insects is appropriate. However if he has an infection or this is early cancer your veterinarian will need to be involved and likely prescribe medication or even need surgery.
