My cat's dry, scabby paws: Should I use home remedies or see a vet?

You should put an e-collar on your kitty, as she will likely lick off the neosporin and ingest it. You may gently wash the paw with warm water so all the debris and dirt is off and then, if it is just dry and cracked, you can put vaseline on the spot. If it looks red and angry or infected it may be advisable to take her to a vet for an exam. IF you put neosporine on the wound and it does not get better within two days, you should definitely take Teagan to a vet as there are some nasty autoimmune diseases which can cause lesions on the paws.

I recommend to call your vet first. If you are noticing an odor, I am concerned there is infection. Normally Mira would need to be examined but with concerns for COVID-19, your veterinarian may change their protocol. They would be able to evaluate this further and determine what would be the safest way to get it off. Yes, I would recommend a vet check up. It might just be a skin infection that will benefit from a good clean and possibly antibiotics treatment. It is best that a vet checks it though in case there is anything caught in the paw itself that needs to be removed. Hope this helps !

You can certainly clean this by taking some gauze that has mild soap and warm water in it a scrub it, not too vigorously but enough to get it clean. This should help, and then placing an e-collar will also keep him from licking it, which will cause infection. However, before you consider this course of action I would strongly recommend that you contact his owners to make sure that they are ok with you choosing to treat this at home. He is their cat, and they may wish to have him seen. Also be aware that this may be painful and you may have difficultly getting him to submit to your treatments. Finally, if he is having other systemic signs of illness, such as lethargy or decreased appetite, you’ll need to go ahead and take him in.
