Why does my cat have dry, crusty, sand-like lumps on its neck?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Our cats have dry hard crusty lumps, generally around the back of the neck area. They don't seem to be bothered by them even when we try partial removal with our finger nails. The lumps are granular and come off like grains of sand. No sign of redness or puss.

Your cats could have miliary dermatitis from allergies, bacterial infection, intestinal parasites, or mites. You could bathe them with a medicated shampoo but they may need an antibiotic, anti-histamine, or corticosteroid depending on the cause. Have your vet take a look at your cats, if the condition persists, to diagnose and treat. a fattyacid supplement may help, as well.
