Why does my cat aggressively dig litter out of the box after a change?

It sounds like your new cat may be a digger! I highly recommend purchasing a litter box that has tall sides or an enclosed lid to help keep the litter better contained. You can also place a litter matter under it to help catch any litter that may be falling out. If you've only gotten her today she's likely still adjusting to her new home. I would give her a few weeks to settle in completely. If she doesn't go potty at all in the next day or so, or seems ill or in distress, a vet visit is also a good idea (and is a good idea with any new pet regardless!)

Freya may just be playing in the box. You may try making her a litter box out of a large rubbermaid container. Leave the top open and you may cut the hole a little higher than the litter line to see if this helps. Give her plenty of play time every day as well to see if that helps. Best of luck.

You can start by changing the litter to see if that makes a difference. Also, I recommend that you try a product called Feliway which you can buy online which can help ease anxiety. If it does not improve, have him evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure that there is not a medical reason such as having difficulty urinating or defecating for example. Good luck!

Usually a behavior change like this is related to stress. Any changes or stressors in the house lately? Guests for the holidays? You traveled and left her while you were out of town? You just moved? New pets? Stray cats hanging out around outside the house? Regardless, I would try to use a product to decrease stress and do some environmental enrichment for her. However, in the meantime while the behavior is occurring, I would recommend switching the type of litter or even consider spraying bitter apple onto the litter itself. I hope this helps! You most likely cannot change to habits of LB in the litter box but you could invest in a litter box with a lid or higher sides. This will help keep the litter inside the box and less messy. Hope that helps

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing this behavior, I can only assume what is going on here. If she is laying on her side, she is just playing and kicking her back legs as cats often do. Most of the time they are holding a toy, blanket, etc with their front legs, chewing on it, and kicking their back legs like a rabbit. If she is just standing up and moving her back legs like she does in the litter box, this could mean that she feels some sensation on her back end like some stool is stuck to her or her anal glands are swollen and bothering her, or she is smelling something or detecting something and trying to cover it up.
