Cat chronic diarrhea from food intolerance? Grass eating a GI sign?

I am very sorry to hear that George is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. From what you are describing it seems likely that George has worms in his gastrointestinal tract, you can purchase a worming treatinent from the pet store or your veterinarian. Choose a broad spectrum. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few days I would continue to monitor George at home. Rest George's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and provide plenty of fresh water. If George does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, George seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. I am sorry Phoenix is not feeling well. In the future I would recommend switching foods slowly over 1-2 weeks to prevent diarrhea. Dogs and cats can have sensitive stomach and get diarrhea if food is changed to fast. You can try going back to the old food and adding in a probiotic to help resolve the diarrhea. However if the diarrhea is getting worse or you notice any blood I would recommend taking Phoenix to a vet for a good physical exam and possible antibiotics to help resolve the diarrhea. i hope that helps and he feels better soon.

It sounds like your cat has a severe case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon. This condition causes diarrhea. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. Food intolerances/allergies can start at any age. This is why it may only now be affecting Ella when she has been eating the same food for a long time. If the diarrhea is server you may want to consider taking Ella to the vet. She may need fluids to correct any dehydration, a fecal examination performed and antibiotics and/or probiotics to help the diarrhea clear up. There are specific prescription diets that your vet can recommend to help with this type of issue. Two I commonly recommend are Hill's i/d and Royal Canin GI low fat. A hydrolyzed protein diet may also be helpful. If you want to try an over the counter food first I would recommend something that is labeled as "limited ingredient" or for "sensitive stomachs". Please don't waste your money on those expensive grain free foods. They are not necessary to use except in extreme cases of an actual diagnosed grain allergy which is rare. Grain free diets are now linked to causing heart disease in dogs (we are not sure yet about cats). I recommend you discontinue use of that type of food. My suggestion would be to use a long term course of a probiotic called Fortiflora. Put one packet on his food every day for at least one month. This will help correct any imbalance in good vs bad intestinal bacteria. DO NOT use human probiotics or things like yogurt. Fortiflora is the best in my opinion and it is palatable so cats like to eat it. Food allergies could be one of the reason for the persistent diarrhoea and weight loss, but these conditions must be differentiated from IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases) and unfortunately from more sinister conditions like tumors. Weight loss in old cats can have different causes as well, and endocrine diseases (hyperthyroidism and diabetes mellitus) are frequently associated with intestinal diseases as well. Considering all these possible clinical scenarios, I would recommend a check up and more tests (blood test+urine analysis including thyroid hormone and feline pancreatic lipase and possibly an ultrasound of the abdomen) to determine underlying cause and treat appropriately. I would expect more vomiting than diarrhea with that type of ingestion. It could be food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, among others. Since Dalila recently saw the vet, I would call them with recommendations.

Certainly mild to moderate food allergies can be the cause of intermittent GI disease, however Shirley's signs seem a bit more serious that what I typically see what food allergies. I hope that you have considered blood work and imaging (x-rays, ultrasound) of the abdomen, because you need to also consider whether this could be due to an intermittent blockage in the stomach or intestines due to a foreign body. Before you consider a diet change to test for food allergies I would want to be sure you have ruled out more serious problems.
