My cat still has diarrhea after giardia treatment. What should I do?

Hi from Bangladesh! Don't worry, it may take a few more days to see improvement. You may also try a bland diet of boiled chicken, rice, and plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help firm up the stool. Using a probiotic for cats and dogs can help as well. Hope this helps!!

Hello, sorry to hear about Lucky. This may or may not be related to his giardia treatment at all. You can try to offer different forms of food, including plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. If he is not eating like his normal self in 2-3 days, is acting lethargic, has vomiting, or recurrent diarrhea then Lucky is gonna need to be re-evaluated by his veterinarian. Re-infection with giardia is always a possibility, but there are also other causes for a decreased appetite such as dietary indiscretion, ingestion of foreign material, liver or kidney disease. Please have Lucky evaluated is he is not better in 2-3 days. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Ths can be a tricky disease to get rid of. The diarrhea caused by Giardia can lead to colitis, an inflammation in the bowel wall, which can make the diarrhea worse and/or persist despite the treatment. You will need to make sure you are cleaning up all of Kenai’s feces daily so that he does not become reinfected. It may also be helpful to ask your veterinarian about adding a probiotic to Kenai’s treatment plan. This can help the diarrhea clear up more quickly. And finally, it may be worth retesting Kenai’s feces to make sure nothing else is going on. He may need an additional antibiotic to help clear up the diarrhea. I hope this helps. Stray cats can pretty nasty parasitic infections. I would check to see if the vet ran a fecal examination + a Giardia test. Both of these can pick up on many parasites that can cause persistent diarrhea. However, if these tests were already done and were negative, then additional testing may be needed to find other not so common causes of diarrhea like the one ran by Idexx. I would suggest going back to the vet for additional treatment and these additional tests if not done already.

I recommend to call your veterinarian. When pets don't respond to treatment as expected, it can mean that the real cause of illness has not been identified. The veterinarian may try a different medication or recommend further diagnostics such as a fecal culture, parasite testing or ultrasound. Hello. It sounds like your cats may have picked up something while boarding or that they still have a gi infection. I would recommend having them rechecked and also having a fecal test run. Grey stools are not normal and it sounds like they may need additional medications. I would also see if your vet can prescribe a probiotic to help get their gi flora back to a healthy level. It appears that she has been tested and treated for many of the common causes of diarrhea, but unfortunately this is a bit more complicated. When this happens, we end up having to do more testing to help identify the cause of the problem. If the orbifloxacin is not working, then I would ask the vet about doing more diagnostics rather than more treatment. This can unfortunately get pricey, but is really the only way to discover the cause of the diarrhea.
