My cat has daily fevers; is his blood test wrong or is he in danger?

Has he been tested for FeLV/FIV viruses? Sounds like he has what is called a FUO - fever of unknown origin. Many things can cause this. You need to start doing some testing to figure out what is going on. That being said, I have treated many cases where owners could not afford diagnostics and the cats eventually ended up getting better with supportive care......don't know why. Some relapsed later on, others not. We really do usually only consider a temp higher than 103.5F as a fever in cat. Are you taking rectal temps as that is the most accurate. Based on this bloodwork I can see that she is anemic, has elevated inflammatory cells, has low chloride and sodium and perhaps a slightly elevated creatinine (which can signal kidney issues though I cannot read it well there). These are not indicative of any disease in particular. This can be due to an infection for sure though. Other possibilities include an inflammatory condition, among other possibilities. I highly recommend you contact the veterinarian that has been treating her to discuss this bloodwork and proceed with therapy accordingly as she has not improved completely. Thank you for sending over the copies of Gonzie's blood work! Looking at the provided results, I see that his creatinine is a tiny bit elevated. This value increases with kidney damage or dehydration. I'd certainly recommend talking to his vet about rechecking his kidney function in a month or two, as well as running a urinalysis to see how well his kidneys are working to concentration his urine. The monocyte increase is extremely mild. I don't worry when this type of white blood cell increases a tiny bit while other white blood cell lines (especially the neutrophils and lymphocytes) are normal. Stress alone can trigger this minor elevation. The RDW helps to give the proportions of the red blood cells' size and volume. Again, this minor elevation does not seem to be significant. A 50% hematocrit is slightly elevated, which means that Gonzie has some extra red blood cells. I would much rather see too many red blood cells than too few! His blood volume could also be more concentrated if he's a bit dehydrated. Platelets can be challenging to read on CBCs since they can clump together, so the machine may read a clump of several platelets as just one single cell. In these cases, it's always useful to manually examine a blood smear under the microscope to determine if adequate numbers of platelets are present. Nothing on the provided lab work makes me terribly concerned at this moment, but I do think it's worth tracking his kidney values and confirming an accurate platelet count. Hi Pamela, Sometimes basic blood work does not give us all the answers we need. If your vet did not include any treatment, I would recommend contacting them and letting them know that Moxie has continued to do poorly. They may recommend trying fluids or some other medications or may recommend rechecking her temperature and examination, then considering some additional tests. Good luck! The story behind the blood test is basically a severe case of kidney failure, it could be acute due to some sort of poisoning that affected the kidneys. these results alarmed your vet obviously, i am assuming he will advise hospitalization on IV fluids for a few days to start with.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Poutcha. His blood work appears fairly unremarkable. His blood sugar is a bit high, but his fructosamine level is normal. Is he diabetic or was this just a screening test? Since he is not improving, I recommend a urine sample be tested and bloodwork for pancreatitis. X-rays of his chest to look for cancer are always a good idea as well. Based on these results, additional bloodwork or even an abdominal ultrasound by a radiologist might be warranted. Fevers in cats are really frustrating. They can have many causes, and sometimes we can’t find any cause at all (Fever of Unknown Origin - FUO). Sometimes IV fluids can help with the fever, and sometimes it will go away in a few days with or without treatment. As long as he is comfortable and eating, I wouldn’t be so concerned. It sounds like your vet has a good plan for treatment.
