Why is my cat coughing and having diarrhea at the same time?

Hello, sorry to hear about Echo. Yes, lungworms in cats can cause a severe cough. To treat these, you have to deworm your kitten potentially more than once. You may need to do another fecal test to confirm the presence of worms. Have Echo evaluated by your veterinarian and bring a stool sample with you to have her tested for lung worms. Other causes of this may include feline asthma, pneumonia, or even bronchitis. Echo may need repeat x-rays as well. Hope this helps and best of luck.

While a hairball could cause vomiting I wouldn't expect diarrhea or coughing. A true cough can be a sign of asthma or a respiratory infection. If he can't rest at night and his appetite is affected I'd recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian. They may recommend an x-ray of his chest and abdomen.

It definitely can be hairballs, it can be from whatever she is eating (plant wise or anything she isn't supposed to) but it could also be asthma. To diagnose asthma Pebbles would need X-rays. If Pebbles has asthma there is an injectable steroid. I would discuss this with your veterinarian. Heartworm disease in cats is extremely difficult to diagnose. Coughing is a very vague symptom that can be part of a number of illnesses. Heartworm (if not tested/on a preventive), respiratory disease, herpesvirus, upper respiratory infections, foreign bodies in the throat or nasal passageways, lung and heart issues can all produce a persistent or wet cough. It is best to schedule a veterinary exam ASAP to help find the underlying cause to Sweet Pea's symptoms, especially if he is refusing to eat or drink.

Hi. Poor Ozzy. First, there isn't such thing as an over the counter veterinarian, so I'm not sure what you mean by that. No antibiotics can be prescribed without an exam. Over the counter worm medication may not work as well as ones prescribed by your veterinarian. If it's been 2 weeks, it would have worked by now. This could mean it is something other then parasites, or in addition to parasites. A cough in a kitty usually is caused by an upper respiratory infection, cardiac disease, asthma, heartworm disease, or parasites (not gotten by the dewormer). If it is an upper respiratory infection and the antibiotics were appropriately prescribed for Ozzy, then it would mean it's a viral upper respiratory infection. Ozzy will need to be seen for a cough of that duration and diarrhea. We don't know the cause here without an exam and diagnostics.

Parasites can cause coughing in some cases, so it may be worth getting a broad spectrum dewormer and treating Jarbou. Other causes for coughing can be viral infection (feline upper respiratory complex), bacterial infection, foreign body or asthama/allergies/bronchitis. There really is no good way to know the difference without a vet exam and probably x-rays. Keep watch on his overall health and make sure that he continues to thrive, is on a good quality diet and deworming is a good start. Make sure there is no smoke, oils or other fumes present in his area.
