My cat tested positive for coronavirus. What about my other cats?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old

My 6 month old cat is cheery & doesnt seem to be showing any kind of worrying symptoms other than frequent sneezing. She was tested for corona. It came back positive. Shes been caged but what does this mean for her & my other two cats? Can she be let out the cage at all to play with others? How do I handle her? One of my other cats (blue) can get easily sick & is sneezing. Should i take blue to the vet for corona testing too?

Coronavirus is present pretty much anywhere and most cats would be positive for it (even asymptomatic ones). Being positive does not mean that coronavorus is the cause of the signs. These could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective).
A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
