My cat has a long cold with eye discharge. When can I get a new cat?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 10 years and 10 months old | 7 lbs

My dad’s cat has had a “cold for at least a couple weeks. She has thick brown drainage coming from both eyes, none from her nose, is sneezing, and a little wheezy. As far as appetite and energy, she seems normal. Because she’s not behaving like she is eating, drinking, and moving around as usual, is this something that will pass? I’m concerned about how long she’s had these symptoms. We are holding off on bringing my daughter’s cat (just moved in). How long should we wait? Boosters first?

Hi, and thanks for your question.
This sign could be compatible with a respiratory tract inflammation/infection. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
If the other cat is not vaccinated I would recommend to wait until the signs are completely resolved and treated. Yes, vaccination for the daughter's cat is best.
