My cat has a long cold with eye discharge. When can I get a new cat?

Megz most likely got an upper respiratory infection from the new cat. There are several strains so even if she is vaccinated she can still catch a cold. Usually they will recover without treatment but if she develops yellow or green discharge or stops eating you should take her to your veterinarian for an exam. They will probably give her a course of antibiotics.

Based on the symptoms, I would agree that this sounds most likely like an upper respiratory condition. However, without a physical examination with a stethoscope I could not confidently say whether or not the lower portions of the respiratory tract are also affected (pneumonia or heart problem). For this reason, a veterinary examination at the very least is my recommendation to try and rule out something more serious. Upper respiratory infections do not typically resolve on their own and tend to get worse slowly. Most of them, particularly those affecting the eyes, are thought to have both viral and bacterial components. The Wapiti Chest formula is an all natural product meant to support existing respiratory health and does not make any claim as to its ability to rid the body of existing infection. This product would be a waste of your money at this time and I would not recommend it. Your kitties most likely need antibiotic / antivirals to combat the infection. Doctor may also recommend medication for the eyes / nostrils depending on the physical exam findings. While I understand the financial constraints, it might be best to deal with things now before they become worse and more expensive to tackle. Hope this makes sense.

This sounds like she has a mild upper respiratory infection, or a cold. While this usually will improve without treatment I would not have the dental done on Wednesday. Her cold could spread to other cats in the hospital. The anesthesia and stress may make her cold worse too. I would reschedule for two weeks, she should be fine then. It's highly possible that they're all experiencing a flare-up of feline herpesvirus, which tends to produce mild upper respiratory signs such as sneezing and ocular discharge. Most cats already have the virus in their bodies but don't have symptoms, but living in a stressful environment (shelters) or going through stressful events (having a new cat brought home) can trigger recurrence of the active infection. If it's been a week and a half they likely do need to see the vet, however most of them will improve with supplementation with the amino acid lysine and supportive care.
