My cat gets a clear runny nose in cold weather. What should I do?

If Nancy is eating well, there is probably not much you need to do except keep her warm & feed her well. It is possible that she is suffering from an upper respiratory infection that may be viral and/or bacterial in origin. If you believe that she is not having difficulty breathing (ie, has a respiratory rate of less than 40 at rest and is not using her belly to help her breathe), she is eating normally, drinking, urinating and defecating normally, and has a normal energy level, you may be able to monitor her at home. Sometimes, keeping her in the bathroom while you run a hot shower can help clear her sinuses. If you notice any purulent (yellow, thick, foul-smelling) discharge from either her eyes or nose, I recommend having her seen by a veterinarian to be examined and treated. I hope this is helpful!

Sneezing and clear eye discharge can indicate the beginnings of something, or may be allergy related. Keeping the eyes and nose clear with a clean washcloth may help. If the discharge changes to yellow or green, Pinta becomes congested, or she becomes feverish, lethargic, or stops eating, those are all signs of something more serious such as an upper respiratory infection that requires veterinary care.

She might have an upper respiratory infection causing the sneezing and discharge. Since she is eating and playing normal, you can monitor her and see if the problem resolves. If she stops eating, becomes lethargic, has a fever, and/or the discharge increases or becomes discolored then she needs to be examined by a vet for treatment.

It sounds like Sioux either has a cold or allergies. Of the two, a cold is more likely. Monitor her closely to make sure she is eating and drinking. If she has green or yellow discharge from her eyes or becomes extremely lethargic, she needs to be seen. Many times this is a virus that will run its course. She can also take 500mg of Lysine which can help. Hope Sioux starts feeling better!

This is likely the start of an upper respiratory infection. These are often due to a virus that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own - much like a cold with people). These can become worse and complicated with bacterial infections, so if Alexa is having issues with congestion, or starts to develop yellow/green nose or eye discharge, then it will be best to take her to a vet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. For now, make sure she is comfortable and free of any stressful situations. This is a classic presentation of a cat with an upper respiratory disease. They usually do have a fever early in the infection and will feel bad. They also tend to avoid eating and drinking, because the congestion in the nose does not allow them to breathe properly. You can help the congestion by giving him a steam bath (if possible). It is also dangerous for us to advise medication without examining Miss Kitty and fully understanding her condition and medical history. I do not recommend giving the penicillin for this. It would be best if you can get Miss Kitty to a vet within the next day or two, but I understand you are unable to catch her. You may consider getting help with this, or hiring a cat trap. While these infections are often due to a virus, they can become complicated with bacterial infections, which will make things much worse.
