My cat can't open his mouth to eat after a seizure. What should I do?

my cat cant open his mouth to eat.is it because the seizure he had earlier?how can i feed him?can he swallow it?

I'm very sorry to hear Frankie is having some difficulty. Frankie absolutely needs to be seen by a veterinarian for evaluation. His inability to open his mouth could be related to trauma that occurred during the seizure (i.e. Dislocation of the TMJ joint, etc) although this usually results in the animal stuck with the mouth open. There are also muscle diseases that can cause the same issue; however this is not common in cats.

I would also highly recommend Frankie be evaluated, if he has not already, for his seizures.

Poor Frankie! Seizures take a lot out of a pet. Recovery can take minutes to days to fully recover. Because he is so young, I would be worried about what caused the seizure. Possibilities include toxin exposure, infection, or epilepsy. I would recommend taking Frankie to a vet to rule out the above. Good luck and kisses to Frankie!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Seizures can occur due to many reasons that go from a toxicity, metabolic diseases, inflammatory diseases and even tumors. That may be the reason she does not want to eat though other reasons such as inflammatory or inflammatory disease or toxicities, among other possibilities could be going on. I highly recommend that you have Milo evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Diagnostics that will be recommended will include bloodwork and advanced imaging such as an MRI. They would also be able to start her on anti-seizure medications to try to avoid the onset of more seizures. Good luck and have a good night! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

If there is a smell coming from his mouth, I worry that he has a wound. If he is painful, then he will not open his mouth. There are also other causes of not being able to use the mouth properly such as infectious and inflammatory conditions. The veterinarian will examine him and may recommend some testing. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help him feel better. I worry that he will become dehydrated from not eating and drinking properly. This may need to be addressed as well. My cat's mouth won't close, drooling, and can't eat. What's wrong?

I am so sorry that your pet Tucker seems to be having some kind of neurological issue or even just trauma to his face. He definitely needs to see a vet soon to get this looked into. The vet will do a bried neuro exam and determine if he is in pain. If the problem seems to be too involved, then a referral to a neurologist or internal specialist may be needed to help Tucker moving forward. It is best to get him seen quickly, especially since he can't eat. If he seems to be in distress (panting, labored breathing, painful) at any point, then its best to get him seen by an ER vet tonight and not wait until morning. I do hope that Tucker can stabilize his condition soon! Best of luck moving forward and take care.

If you have a regular vet you can call them to see if they have an emergency line or answering service that can refer you to an emergency clinic in your area. Keeping your cat calm and quiet can help keep him from getting injured more, but he can't close his mouth at all he needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Why is my cat having trouble closing his mouth and his tongue is out?

Hi there. There could be a couple things going on with Jake. He could have a growth in his mouth or on his gums that is preventing him from closing his mouth. He could also have pain or something else going on in his TMJ joint which makes it uncomfortable for him to fully clothes his jaw. I would recommend you taking him to the vet for them to examine him and they may need to take an x-ray. They can then determine what is the next best step. My dog yelps and can't open his mouth. Is his jaw locked or sore?

I’m sorry Oscar is dealing with this. He is quite a handsome guy! Pain opening the mouth can be caused by a few thing including infections or an autoimmune disease called masticatory muscle myositis (MMM). I would have Oscar evaluated by his veterinarian. They may be able to get an idea based on their exam, and they can also do special blood testing for MMM. They can start Oscar on medication as indicated to help him be much more comfortable. In the meantime continue feeding him very soft foods. Hope he is feeling much better soon!

My cat struggles to eat or drink. Is something stuck in his mouth?

I recommend to take him to the vet immediately he may have a foreign body (FB) in his mouth. Linear FB such as strings can be under the tongue. the fact he seems in distress and not eating/drinking will require him to be checked by a vet possibly under sedation to look thoroughly and safely in the mouth do not to try to do it yourself especially since he is not cooperative .Try and get him in a carrier to take him.
