Cat with cancer and bloody diarrhea. Is a vet prescription needed?

You should never assume cancer. Have Cali physically examined by your veterinarian to rule out other causes (parasites, diet, allergies, etc.) before deciding on euthanasia. This may require lab work (CBC, chemistry panel, thyroid panel, urinalysis, fecal exam) and/or imaging (x-rays, endoscopy). Once you have a diagnosis, you can discuss treatment options with your vet. In the meantime, consider a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts.

Casper needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Bloody stool can be present for many reasons including parasites, bacterial over growth, improper diet, viral infection or poisoning. Bring in a fresh sample of the feces for parasite testing. The veterinarian may recommend an antibiotic, probiotic and a bland diet. You need to start ruling out the potential causes so that Casper gets the correct treatment. I hope this helps.

I hate to hear that Daisy is having these problems. The malt paste acts like a lubricant and makes it easier to pass the stool. The blood in the stool can be related to MANY things including parasites, disease of her organs, inflammatory bowel disease, improper diet and cancer. I would recommend to have Daisy examined by her veterinarian to see if the cause can be determined. In the mean time, I would recommend to add canned food into her daily diet (at least one can a day with extra warm water mixed in). If this helps, switch her over to an all canned food diet. Sometimes the stool is too sticky and the water will help. I would also recommend to switch ALL her food to something that is generally easy to digest. The brand I recommend is Royal Canin and they even make a sensitive stomach formula which would be a good initial option. Couple of concerns here. Were you given an option of referral to obtain a definitive diagnosis? Differentiation of these diseases requires biopsy. Did your pet have an ultrasound? Also having a chemotherapy medication made in to a liquid is a big safety concern unless a pet has a feeding tube. Were you counseled about safe drug and urine/fecal handling with this drug? Also has your kitty had blood monitoring with this drug for safety? There are typically some other things we do with cats with GI disease but this is case dependent. Also the dosing for chlorambucil is different for different cats. What would really be best, if you feel that you need more help beyond your vet, you could request referral to a specialist (either an internist or an oncologist). I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet. Chronic diarrhea in cats can have many causes, including hyperthyroidism, IBD, intestinal lymphoma, intestinal parasites, etc. The vet will do an exam and may recommend lab work like blood work or fecal intestinal parasite screens. Depending on the suspected cause, they can then recommend a treatment. Note that some causes of diarrhea are difficult to diagnose and it can take several attempts at treatment to find something that works for that individual patient.

Poor Sophie, she looks very sweet. It sounds to me like she is having serious digestive issues and needs to be examined by a veterinarian. She could have developed inflammatory bowel disease or some other internal issue causing the blood stools. She likely is pooping outside the litter box because she has increased urgency to go and can't hold it as long due to a medical issue. It is unlikely the pooping outside the box will resolve until the medical issue is addressed. Your veterinarian may need to do blood work to figure out what is causing the problem. Sophie may need a special prescription diet or a medication like Flagyl to help resolve the issue. If she is drooling it's likely she may have dental disease so your veterinarian can examine her mouth and address the problem. With her balance being off I'm also concerned she may be in pain and require prescription pain medication. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for cats so you will need to have these prescribed by a veterinarian. I'm sorry to hear that Casper has had so much diarrhea lately! Yes, it is certainly possible that the stress of his visitor coupled with his ingestion of the other cat's food and treats could have caused some gastroenteritis (inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract), which led to diarrhea. A bit of blood can occur in the stool as a result of irritation to the colon. If Casper is still eating, drinking and acting relatively normally, you can try a home remedy. Start by withholding food for 24 hours, then offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken for a few days before gradually mixing his normal food with the boiled chicken over another 5-7 days. If at any point Casper becomes lethargic, starts vomiting, has profuse bloody diarrhea, or stops eating, he will need to take a trip to the vet for further evaluation.
