My cat has little bumps on his ears and neck. What could be the cause?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11.5 lbs

My cat has little bumps near ears and on both sides of neck; however, the picture attached is the only one that looks like this. My husband and I moved from Alaska to fort Leonard wood Missouri and it has been since October since we gave him a bath but I deshedded him today and will give him a bath tomorrow. What could be the cause for these bumps?

This may be a small reaction to getting bitten by something or an allergy to something in the environment. the skin around the scab does not appear to be inflamed or infected and that is a good sign. If it does not go away or begins to spread or bother him, I would see a vet for medication to clear it

She could have feline acne and I'm concerned the area could be infected with her continually opening them up. If she does have feline acne, she needs a medicated wash to treat it and antibiotics for any infection. She needs to see a vet for this, I'd take her into one first thing in the morning. I am not sure what this is. It could be a bacterial infection, fungal infection, mites, allergies (food or fleas or environmental), or an inflammatory condition. I would recommend that you have your vet check Trinity out. The vet will do a thorough examination of all of her skin to check for other lesions. They may take a small sample for examination under a microscope. Then they can create an appropriate treatment plan for your beautiful kitty.

Poor Patches! The bumps that you are feeling down her back sound most suspicious for lesions that occur as a result of a skin infection. Since Patches goes outdoors, make sure she is receiving a high quality flea preventative, such as Advantage ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=23035 ), Revolution, or Bravecto on a regular basis. Some cats can scratch from fleas, leading to the onset of a skin infection. You can also try bathing her in a medicated antimicrobial shampoo ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27982 ) if she will tolerate it. If her skin lesions continue or worsen, Patches will need to go to her vet because she may need a course of antibiotics. I hope that all goes well!

What are these recurring scabs and bumps on my cat's neck and ears?

Ouch! Those are some major hot spots in that photo. I would recommend having Lili seen by your vet so the area can be clipped and cleaned and any medications such as pain or antibiotics can be given to help it heal a bit faster. I'd also keep Lili from scratching or pawing at it as this can introduce bacteria and more inflammation which can slow healing. If only Lili is affected and you're not noticing other issues like parasites, etc, it is possible there is an allergy underlying. She could be rubbing up against something causing the itchiness, or could have an ingredient allergy to something in her food (or a treat if the spots correspond with intermittent feeding of a treat or wet food). Other issues such as an underlying illness like an immune or metabolic issue can also cause scabbing and skin issues that affect only one cat in the household. A vet visit is a good option at this point both to treat the current scabs and to see if a food trial, allergy meds, or additional testing such as bloodwork to rule out any underlying health issues may be beneficial in finding the cause.

My cat has a pink bump and scabs near her ear. What should I do?

The most likely cause for scabs and bumps in that location is scratching due to itchiness, and the most common cause for this is either ear mites or fleas. I recommend using a cat safe flea/mite product. I would otherwise leave the bumps alone, and do not apply any products. If the flea/mite treatment doesn't work, then I would have her seen by a vet to see if there is a different cause. Best of luck with Lydia!

My cat has tiny bumps on his ears. What are they and how to treat?

Carbon has milliary dermatitis. It is often caused by a reaction to insect bites like knats, or from allergies. Basically it is a skin infection/irritation. Usually it will clear up on its own if the cause is gone. You can clean the skin with a mild antibacterial pad and apply antibacterial ointment. If Carbon goes outside using a flea prevention product will help repell insects too. Allergies are often seasonal so as it cools off and the bugs and humidity go away this should resolve. Why does my cat have small hard bumps on his neck and belly?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a skin infection which may be secondary to something like allergies. The infectious component would have to be taken care of but it is crucial to take care of the possible allergy as well so this does not continue to happen. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Skin lesions like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), an infection (bacterial or fungal), allergies, or another underlying medical issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, so he could start any treatment (antibiotics, anti-itch medications, parasiticide) that he may need. In the meantime, I would clean the area will diluted betadine if possible and then keep it dry, and trim his nails back as much as possible to keep him from scratching at it. Good luck!

What's this infected scab on my cat's neck if he's not itching?

Have you put any medicine on that area such as flea prevention before it was noticed? Sometimes that is a sign of a reaction from a topical. Another area to check is his ears, sometimes they can scratch their neck instead and. Cause a wound if there is an infection or mites. If it doesn't improve then your vet can check for an infection or an allergy that could cause it
