My cat has a broken leg and is in pain. What medicine can I give?

What medicine do you prescribed for a cat broken leg? My cat has broke her one leg. And she is not able to walk properly. I don't have money to take her to vet. What medicine do you prescribed for make her pain less

How do you know her leg is broken? Sadly cats are special, unique creatures that can not metabolize human medications like we can or even dogs (some medications). They are missing an enzyme needed to break down drugs like aspirin, Tylenol and advil. Giving them those drugs will cause them to become very sick and even die. There is no safe drug you can give Eevee that will not cause more harm than good. She needs to see a vet to be diagnosed with the fracture and be prescribed medications for pain that is safe to give a cat (onsior, buprenorphine or gabapentin). She needs to be crated in a large dog crate for 6-8 weeks for the fracture to heal. Letting her walk around and go outside will not allow for healing if her leg is broken. At a minimum confine her and see how she heals. Cats are amazing in that way.

A typical pain killer would be an appropriate opiate or one of the non steroidal antiphlogisitics licensed for cats such as Onsior. Plwase do not give your cat Tylenol (it will kill her) nor Aspirin (she cannot metabolize that and it will accumulate in toxic amounts. Ask your veterinarian to prescribe a pain medicine suitable and licensed for cats.

There are low cost Veterinary clinics in some SPCAs. Cats are sometimes miraculous healers but it has been so long. She may just need it splinted. But if splinted she would absolutely need to be crated in a large dog crate for 6-8 weeks and not allowed outside. If it can't heal with a splint it may need to be amputated. Cats can live a long happy pain free life with 3 legs. Allowing her to be outside and walking and jumping on a broken leg for sure isn't going to help it heal. I hope you can find some help for her. Since she is pregnant sedation may have to wait until at least the kittens are born. Good luck!

I would take your cat into a vet immediately. This will be extremely painful for him, and he needs treatment for the broken leg. Leaving it untreated can lead it to heal incorrectly affecting his ability to walk. It can also cause nerve damage. Unfortunately you cannot give him any human pain medications, as many human ones are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. He absolutely needs veterinary treatment for it, please take him into a vet now. Good luck!

My cat can't walk after being hit by a car. Is her leg broken?

Please have Loka seen by a vet immediately. She is likely in a lot of pain, and may have serious internal injuries as well if she was hit by a car. There are indeed treatments your vet can provide to help keep her comfortable. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for cats, so I do not recommend giving any to Loka without consulting with your vet. My cat keeps taking off his broken hind leg cast. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Leo! Which bone is broken in the hing leg? I would try again with a splint and Leo needs to be placed in a dog crate, with an E-collar and sedatives. The only bones in the hind leg that will heal with a splint is the tibia and fibula. The femur usually need surgery to fix and can't be splinted well. So if that is what the vet is trying to splint I would stop. You can try just strict crate rest for 6-8 weeks if it is the femur. Cats are amazing at healing. But if the bone is in multiple pieces I would just amputate. Cats do well with 3 legs. I wish you the best!

There are no medications that you can use at home, as most human medications are toxic to cat. Others are not really pain relief medications and would not even touch the pain cause by a fracture. My cat has a broken hip and is in pain. Can he get a cast or sedation?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear about Punti. Hip fractures cannot be immobilize with a cast - it is not an option for this kind of fractures. However, if Punti is still in pain despite anti-inflammatory medication, your local vet should be able to prescribe stronger pain killers for him that can be given alongside anti-inflammatory drugs. If that treatment does not help, hip surgery may be required to fix the break or to remove the head of the femur (depending on the type of fracture). Good luck.
