Is there a cat breed that is always deaf, like the Turkish Angora?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! No! Not all white blue eyed cats are deaf. It all depends on genes and which is expressed in the kitten. It's hard to give you the odds because it depends on if one or both parents are deaf (fully or partially) but it seems to range from 52-96% are partially or fully deaf depending on what study you read. What a beautiful cat! Judging by her coat color and quality she very well could be a Turkish Angora, however there is no way to know for sure. There are several different DNA testing kits that you could try that may help you determine her breed. Whatever her breed, she’s gorgeous! Good luck on with your lovely cat!

Deafness in white cats can occur with any eye color but is more prevalent in white cats with blue eyes. It is a very high percent chance that white cats will be deaf (70%). If they are deaf they may not be able to hear cars or predators which may cause their lives to be shorter. White outdoor cats are also more sensitive to the sun like pale skinned people are are at a higher risk to develop skin cancer. If you can not keep the abnormal kitten indoors then try to place it in a new home that can keep it indoors. It is not wrong to find other homes for all the kittens. If you can not find the abnormal kitten a new home then do the best that you can. If it can not run away from predators it will be at a higher risk. It is normal for 2 week old kittens to not be able to walk normally. They will get stronger and more coordinated in the next week or 2. I wish you the best!

The best way to check for deafness is to snap your fingers behind Alice's head. You must make sure she does not know you are approaching her, that you do not touch any of her hair and that a breeze is not created that may move her fur. If she doesn't react, then you know that she is deaf. If that area on her cornea is new or if the eye shows any inflammation or squinting, you should have it checked out by her veterinarian. Cats can get scars, cornea dysplasia and a few other conditions that may fit your description. When in doubt, have it checked out. A Feliway diffuser or Royal Canin Calm diet food may help Alice to have less anxiety in general and you may consider trying them. A head tilt in a kitten often indicates a severe ear infection that affects the middle and inner ear. This could definitely cause her to go deaf in that one ear, but she wouldn't be expected to be completely deaf. However, it is suspicious that she didn't react to the vacuum. It is possible that she has a hereditary defect (more common in white cats) that is causing her to be deaf. In either case, it's best to have her evaluated by a veterinarian. Many white cats are deaf but i suspect the falling ear has nothing to do with it, it's probably due to some sort of trauma, possibly an ear infection, i would recommend having it checked by a vet ASAP.

Loud noises can be painful to pets due to their sensitive hearing but it is unlikely to cause true deafness. The only way to definitely tell if she has hearing loss is through an electrical test called BAER test. This is only available at specialized universities and centers. It may be that she has just become accustomed to the loud noise and therefore does not have the same reaction as she used to.
