My cat is biting his nails. How do I safely clip them at home?

Absolutely! It is easy to clip a cat's nails at home as long as she is relatively cooperative. You can squeeze the tip of each toenail to extrude the claw and identify the pink quick. Hello and thank you for your question about Maggie. Many polydactyl cats have the same issue and routine nail trimming is a must. This should be done every 2-4 weeks depending on how fast the nails grow. I advise to go online and watch a few videos on trimming cat’s nails. It’s easier to see the process than to read about it. In general, you want to trim off the hook portion of the nail and avoid the quick (that’s the pink tissue within the nail) by at least 5mm. If she won't let you trim them, you will need to take her to a vet and have them do it. They can give her some sedation, if needed, to make it easier for them to trim the nails.

Clipping nails can be really tricky! It is best to get a professional to help you if you are unsure, but if this is really not an option I will give you some tips. First and foremost wrap Fluffy up well in a towel, this will stop the jumping. You can pull out each leg as you need it. Have someone hold the towel and extend the leg for you. You need a good sharp and strong pair of nail clippers for a rabbit, I use dog ones. Have a look at the nail for the red quick and aim to cut about a quarter of a centimeter in front of it so you definitely don't get blood. With black nails cut very tentatively on the first nail and use as a guide of how much to remove on the rest. When you decide to cut a nail commit to it and cut clean and quick so as not to damage the nail bed. It is a good idea to have some permanganate on hand just in case they do bleed. Best of luck

Poor girl. This happens even to the best nail trimmers. He only thing that will successfully stop a bleeding nail every time is an over the counter Kwik Stop styptic powder from your local pet store. It is good that it has stopped bleeding; however, I would pick up some of this powder from the store first thing in the morning. Otherwise, place newspaper in the litter box tonight and monitor it until you go to bed. A light bandage can also be tried; however, cats in particular won't allow a bandage to stay in place. Hopefully things have stabilized for now and she will continue to do well until morning. Most of these nail bleeding situations are fine and don't result in serious complications (i.e. anemia). Hello. This could be a behavioral issue, or a behavioral issue plus paronychia ( skin infection around the nail/claws ). Even though you do not see anything unusual, a veterinarian can examine the skin, do a skin impression to see if there is a population of bacteria or yeast organisms present around the nail beds. An appropriate treatment can then be started. Often, this could also be an indication, & the only evidence of, an allergy. Allergies can come from the food or the environment & can be challenging to distinguish in cats with mild symptoms. So it is very helpful to get professional help with this. Tex sounds like a handful!!!! I don't generally suspect pain but certainly he could be irritated! Clipping his nails will help prevent this from happening. Since he will not allow it. You can seek the help of a professional who may have more luck (but no promises). You could also talk to your veterinarian about a sedative like Gabapentin that you could give at home and once it kicks in, you might be able to clip the nails.
