My cat bites and scratches when I pet him. How do I make him stop?

I am so sorry that you are experiencing these problems with biting with Your cat. I am sure it is very upsetting for you. First of all rest assured that this is a very normal young cat behaviour. Cats learn through play biting and it is part of our role as pet parents to help them learn limits. The behaviours will calm down with age. I would not attempt negative reinforcement such as striking Your cat or speaking harshly as this will potentially create more serious behaviour issues such as anxiety and fear-aggression. Try some calm corrections and positive reinforcement. If Your cat bites you, simply say in a calm voice "no" and stop interacting with her for a few moments. This over time will teach her that biting is not a desired form of play. Also try reinforcing her as she starts to play in a good way by not biting, and giver her a small training treat. If Your cat does manage to bite hard enough to break the skin be careful of a possible infection. Monitor your wound for heat. Swelling, or discharge. Make an appointment with your doctor if this occurs. If you are struggling with the biting after a couple of weeks of the above suggested training methods, consider a few sessions with a behaviourist. Scratching is a normal behavior that aids cats in the marking of their territories in the form of scratch marks. Scent glands in their paws leave olfactory clues for other cats to alert them to their presence. Cats also find it pleasurable as a means of exercise and stretching. Scratching also allows cats to keep their claws healthy and shortened. Unlike dogs, a cats’ claws do not exfoliate evenly from the end; rather they peel off in layers like an onion. What is inappropriate scratching? Inappropriate scratching is ultimately determined by the owner, but is generally directed at furniture, screens, carpets and rugs and other items that the cats finds suitable. What can I do to prevent this? The easiest way to prevent severe damage is to trim your cats nails every 2-4 weeks. It is best to begin this process when the cat is very young, as they will become more accustomed to this procedure. However, older cats can learn to tolerate it as well. Another excellent method is to provide them with a suitable scratching substrate. As with nail trimming, this is also best started at an early age before the scratching behavior begins, but older cats will also generally accept such items as carpet or sisal fiber scratching posts or corrugated cardboard. If he is attacking you and not trying to play then he should be confined, you should always keep him up to date on Rabies, and you should discuss behavior modification drugs with your Vet, like prozac. I would get it in a liquid form you can put in his food. I would purchase feliway diffusers for around the house, one should go in his room. You can play with him but as soon as he gets over stimulated you need to stop and walk away. If he starts to get aggressive and is coming towards you squirt him with a water bottle. It is inappropriate behavior for a cat to attack you and injury you that badly. You need to strongly consider if this is the kind of relationship you want from a pet. It sounds like Gatsby is playing and some cats do like to play very rough. Try to think of other ways to give him that wild play he desires. Try to set aside at least 30 minutes a day to play hard with Gatsby so that he is running around being crazy! You can also try to use something like a large stuffed animal to see if he will wrestle with it (with you holding it obviously) instead of your hand. Provide a cat tree or other climbing opportunities as this helps to satisfy his instinctual needs. Lastly, when he starts to play to hard, stop the play and ignore him. One is to stop play completely when he gets too rambunctious and to simply get up and walk away. Once he has calmed down, play can resume. This can help teach him that getting too excited stops the fun. You can also start playing with toys such as a feather on a string that allow you to interact from a distance. if he focuses on and plays with those, tossing a treat and praising him can help him learn that this is a good thing to take his energy out on. At times when he is calm and sits nicely for petting, be sure to offer lots of praise and a few treats. It will take some time, but hopefully this will help teach him what you do and don't want him to do.
