Cat bite wound reopened and looks bad. Can I reuse old meds?

I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing these issues with Waffles. Thank you for providing a picture of the wound. I would start by placing an e-collar on her straight away so she can't bite or lick the wound. This will cause further tissue trauma and may introduce infection. Cat bites are very likely to form an abcess. Which is an accumulation of Bacteria and dead and dying white blood cells. This forms puss and accumulates when wounds close over infection, under the skin, until it bursts. It sounds to me from what you are describing hay Waffles had an abscess which has not re-opened. Due this high likelihood for an abcess, as well as the fact that the would is currently open and bleeding, I would advise taking Waffles to the veterinarian soon. The vet will clean the wound by flushing it with saline. The vet may need to place a surgical drain in order to prevent pus building up and an abcess forming. The vet can also prescribe more medications such a as antibiotics, pain relief, and anti-inflammatories to make Waffles comfortable and help the healing process. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'd call your Vet tomorrow and ask if they have the injectable antibiotic called convenia. I think that will solve you having to medicate Cinco. But yes the ointment baneocin should be ok, just prevent him from licking it. It may not be enough, especially if your Vet felt he needed to be on oral antibiotics. Good luck!

That is a pretty large wound! That being said though, it looks like it is healing fine. It does not appear swollen or to have discharge coming from it. The tissue looks healthy. Having it stitched when it first happened which would have allowed it to heal faster. I am not sure how long it's been but a wound that size would take weeks to heal without stitches. If I were you I would keep applying a topical antibiotic cream and just leave it be. Stop using the Betadine. If he is licking it you must stop that behavior by using an Elizabethan collar (cone). As long as he keeps licking it will not heal. If you want it to heal faster you need to take him to a vet to have it stitched. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Antibiotic ointment may not by enough to treat it and Collic possibly will need a course of antibiotic in form of tablets to get back to normal. I would recommend Collic to be checked over by your local vets to fully assess the wound and to recommend the best treatment option.

Although a picture of the wounds would help to determine more specifically the most appropriate treatment needed, bite wounds/injuries are infected for definition so antibiotics (like amoxicillin and clavulanic acid at 12,5mg/kg twice daily and painkillers -specifically designed for cats like Meloxicam or carprofen for example would help-. Disinfection of the wounds can be possibly started with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Stitches may be needed depending on the type of wounds.

Poor Lilly! If she was missing all day, she could have done something to cause the wound to open up more. When a cat has a wound and is on medication, it's best to keep her confined to allow her to heal correctly. I see she has stitches, and cats with stitches need to be kept quiet so the area can heal properly. I would keep her indoors while this wound is healing to prevent her from opening it up more, as well as disappearing and potentially missing times when she needs to take her medications. Set up a litter box inside for her along with food and water. Once the wound is fully healed and her stitches are removed, she can start going back outside. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! I typically recommend mixing Betadine and water until you get a light brown mixture and use that to clean wounds. If it is a superficial scrape then it will likely heal but if there is a flap of skin or the wound looks to be deep, it will need veterinary care most likely.
