My cat has a belly mass, lost weight. Is her sneezing serious?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Bunny. Sounds like she is suffering from a mild upper respiratory infection. Not sure how old she is but both kittens and adult cats suffer from these infections. Kittens get infected from their mothers who start shedding the viruses thus infecting the kittens. Many cats live their whole lives carrying these viruses. They will occasionally develop signs of upper respiratory infections during times of stress at any point in time. We vaccinate for a few of these upper respiratory viruses but we still see many many cases. The vaccines should provide some protection and usually adult cats develop very mild signs. Signs range from sneezing, runny eyes, runny nose, coughing, fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, decreased water intake, etc. Treating these infections can range from very simple to very complex cases that take weeks to months to improve. If signs remain mild, monitoring is sometimes appropriate. If the signs progress to not eating, lethargic, thick discharge from the nose and/or eyes, then you should get her evaluated by your veterinarian. They can gather a history, perform an exam, and advise you on possible diagnostics and treatment. Treatment can involve antibiotics to protect or treat secondary bacterial infections, antiviral medicines, a good deworming program, and vaccination program, eye drops/eye ointments if the eyes are involved, nose drops, a nutritional supplement called L-lysine added to his food may help, and probiotics are all things to try. Sometimes kittens have a nasopharyngeal polyp which can present as chronic upper respiratory disease which doesn't respond well to treatment. This is a polyp in the nasal passageway and back of the throat. These can be found by using sedation/anesthesia and evaluating the back of the throat and thus removed if found. Good luck.

Shelby most likely has an upper respiratory infection or viral cold. This can cause nasal congestion and poor appetite. I recommended you take a warm cloth and clean her nose as the nasal discharge can clog up the nostrils causing the mouth breathing. Also if you warm up wet food, fish is best, it will make it more appetizing as the heat will enhance the aroma of the food. That should help to,stimulate her appetite. If Shelby isn't better soon please take her in for treatment. As she's tiny I don't want her to be sick long as she doesn't have much body reserves. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Vomiting several times a day for a week along with not eating or drinking much is certainly concerning. The sneezing could indicate a respiratory infection. There are lots of health reasons for her symptoms and Lilly really should see her veterinarian as soon as possible to have her evaluated and treated. Your veterinarian will do an exam and may recommend additional testing such as blood work or x-rays to pin down a cause so Lilly can get the treatment she needs and start to feel better.

Hi there! You are absolutely right, stress could be a reason for the sneezing and diarrhea. For example, the feline herpes virus manifests as an URI and is exacerbated by stress, it should also be noted that it is quite contagious among cats. Hopefully, the foster cat was UTD on vaccines; however, there is not vaccination for herpes (which usually manifests as eye and nasal discharge, etc). It is also possible that there is just something in the environment that is irritating, particularly if you have used new airfreshner, litter, etc. Having Dahlia (lovely name) examined by her veterinarian is best, but since she seems to be doing fine otherwise I think it is fair to continue montioring her for a couple more days. If her symptoms gets worse or new symptoms are noticed she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I would also keep her separated from other cats for now. From the medications that Miso has been put on it sounds like your veterinarian may suspect Miso may have a virus causing the upper airway congestion, we sometimes use Lysine to help with viral upper airway congestion. The Herpes virus (along with some other viruses) causes chronic upper airway congestion. This can cause watery eyes (not always), sneezing and nasal discharge (not always)-recurs with stress. It can have a secondary bacterial component to it that responds to an antibiotic like Clavamox. Or this can be just a bacterial upper respiratory infection that is not responding well to the antibiotic of choice. Clavamox is typically an antibiotic that does well with upper respiratory infections. My biggest concern with your note is the looking bloated. I would have Miso evaluated by your veterinarian for looking bloated and discuss an alternate antibiotic, an antihistamine or I will even sometimes use saline nasal drops with a humidifier to help with moisturizing the airways. Poor William. He has gone through quite a lot and his immune system must be run down, so he has probably picked up a virus. I would not worry too much at this stage, maybe when your vet opens give them a ring give them an update and ask them what they suggest you feed him.He is already on medications so those will help bacteria at bay, it is important that he starts eating perhaps you could offer something bland but equally quite strong smelling such as boiled white fish or tuna in water.
