Why is my cat suddenly attacking his tail, eyes dilated, growling?

Your description makes me think he is very itchy and cats can act crazy when they are itchy. I would take a fine tooth comb and comb him on his back by his tail. Then wipe the comb on a white wet paper towel. If you see black squiggly flecks that dissolve with water to bloody streaks that is flea poop. Obviously if you see adult fleas you have an answer. Check his skin for scabs. Another possibility is full anal glands. Those would need to be checked by a Vet. If he is eating and otherwise fine have him checked about the holiday. Good luck!

Poor guy! It could be a sign of pain or trauma from the event including head or neck trauma, or a side effect of pain medication. If he was bleeding did they find the source of it? Was he given any medications at the clinic (pain medication?) or to take home? Was he appropriate mentally there and then has declined? The problem with kittys getting attacked is that the attacker often shakes them while biting. This can create a lot of shear trauma under the skin that is initially not seen. If no meds have been given i would worry about pain or head trauma. I would recommend calling the clinic that saw him to report this change. The safest thing for these patients is for them to be hospitalized for monitoring because not all problems show up right away. If head trauma is suspected medications may need to be given for this. It would be hard to say. If your vet can't find any health issues, I would see if there is another trigger - time of day, location, specific events that happen (are you putting down food first? Could there be a critter in the wall?) or if something new has happened (new person, new pet, etc). This may help you pinpoint a cause which you can then use to adjust behavior as needed.

He may be having vision problems, high blood pressure or might have had a seizure. If his pupils are wide open, please take him to an out of hours or emergency veterinarian now. He may have high blood pressure and fast intervention can reverse any blindness caused by this. If his pupils are normal and react normally, take him to a vet tomorrow for an exam.

Fleas love the tail area and are very itchy. I would also treat for fleas. Over the counter options are Frontline or the Seresto collar. I wish you the best!

It could also be that he has problem with his anal sacs. They may be impacted or infected. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for sure what is causing this behavior. I'd have him seen by a vet to have this diagnosed and treated. Since this has been doing on for 2.5 weeks, I'd see if you can get him into a vet today. I hope this helps!

You should take Cheshire to your local vets for full clinical examination and a blood test to check his blood sugar level, red cell count, kidney and liver function. If the blood results come back normal and he keeps having the episodes, he may need further investigation, like MRI scan of the brain. Alternatively, your vet may recommend treatment with anti-epileptic medication asa trial.
