My dog ate thread and it's hanging out. What to do before the vet?

You did the right thing by cutting the thread. NEVER pull on a string or thread like that. If it is threaded back through her intestines it can cut through. Because this may be the case, I would get her checked by your vet as soon as possible, especially if she starts showing signs of sickness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, etc.

Poor Lucy. It sounds like she is trying to get the thread out, but it may be stuck. Apply very gentle pressure to see if you can remove the rest of the thread, but if you can't, have her seen by a vet to get it removed.

If the string came out very easily without having to pull hard, it may be OK. If you had to put a lot of tension when pulling it, there is a chance the string could have cut the esophagus. Watch closely for vomiting (especially with blood), gagging, difficulty swallowing or decreased appetite. Also watch for black, tarry stools. This is a sign of bleeding in the esophagus, stomach or small intestines. If any of these symptoms are seen, I would take her to a veterinarian immediately. They may want to do blood work, x-rays, or even use a scope to evaluate the esophagus for injuries.

Oh no, that's not good! More than likely, this one thread will pass without problem especially if it isn't very long. The worst case scenario would be it could cause a linear foreign body, signs of which include a decreased appetite, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. It is possible that she has an intestinal obstruction or blockage from eating parts of her blanket. This is usually diagnosed with x-rays of the abdomen, and an intestinal obstruction is a surgical emergency. If he absolutely cannot get her to a veterinarian until 7am, I recommend not feeding her any food in the meantime. She can have access to water, however she may vomit this up. You should immediately take her to a petER, preferably to one where they have an endoscope with which they can take out the needle from the stomach before it travels on into the intestine and causes an intestinal obstruction as a "linear foreign body" or the needle perforates the stomach or the intestines.
