Why do I react to one cat with itching and swelling, but not others?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | 8 lbs

I have owned multiple cats over the years and currently have one. he rubs on me and sleeps next to me all the time. However I'm watching a friend's cat for a few months and I find when she rubs on me I itch and swell. They eat the same foods and use same kind of litter. I've had her for 3 months now. She's fixed. I can't explain why I have such a reaction to her. I found female cats before but she is the only cat I've had a reaction to. Could you help me explain why?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

You are likely allergic to her dander (skin cells). Despite diet and litter that is specific to the cat. It is best to discuss management with your Doctor or a Dermatologist if you are keeping this cat for a long period of time to help control your symptoms.

I wish you the best!
