Is apple cider vinegar safe for my cat's ear yeast infection?

No, I don't recommend to use this wash. Ear mites will not be killed by a vinegar wash. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yeast infections are uncommon in cats. Ring work (fungal infection) might be what you are referring to. Has Candy been diagnosed by a Vet to have ring worm? The treatment of diagnosed ring worm in cats is an ORAL anti-fungal medications and/or Lyme sulfur dips. I do not recommend using an ointment that Candy could lick off her fur and ingest. Lyme sulfur dips can be found at a Veterinary hospital or online. I hope this helps and good luck!

Ear infections are not an emergency per se, but do need to be addressed when your vet is open. If you don’t have a pet ear cleaner, I would leave it alone until you see your vet. I actually recommend bringing Hank to a veterinarian to have them evaluate his ears. The reason for this is some ear infections can be yeast not bacterial or they may have a mixture of both. You also can have a dog that appears to have an ear infection when in fact has ear mites (this is not very common but does happen). I also recommend making sure that the eardrum is intact prior to putting any medication into the ear. Your veterinarian can take a sample from Hank and look at it under the microscope to see what is causing the infection. I also recommend cleaning the ears out when a dog has an ear infection and depending on what is going on with the ear would depend on what ear cleaner I would recommend. If for some reason after treating his ear he still has an infection, your veterinarian can run a culture to see exactly what bacteria is in his ear and what antibiotics are best to treat. We typically do not do this as the first round of diagnostics due to the cost of about $200 give or take some depending on your vet and location. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There isn't any concern for over-exposure to the vinegar or water, but I would recommend a different approach for flea control. That mixture will not control fleas. The best treatment is monthly flea prevention from your veterinarian, given every 30 days for at least 3 months. Products purchased over the counter and flea collars don't work. You must treat all the pets inside and outside your home. I would also recommend a product called Knockout Spray for inside the home. You need to focus on dark areas, like under furniture, and treat any hard floor surfaces as well. After the product dries, vacuum thoroughly and throw out the bag or clean out the canister if bag-less. Apple cider vinegar will not fix your flea problem, and will only prolong the discomfort to your pet. I know the products seem expensive, but they truly work and in the long run is cheaper if you follow the flea treatment steps. Good luck and kisses to Gracie!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. The ear, honestly, to me does not look that bad from the photo. Of course I cannot see down into the ear canal or the ear drum without examining her in person with an otoscope so there may be something down there causing the issue. There is no way for me to tell from a photo. If she is really scratching at the ear or starts to scratch it when you touch the ear then chances are she has ear mites. People often mistake an ear mite issue with a bacterial/fungal infection but the treatments are very different. Ear mites are very common in kittens. ( https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/ear-mites-otodectes-in-cats-and-dogs ) The best treatment for ear mites is Revolution topical solution that you would put on like a flea/tick drops on the back of the neck. DO NOT put it in the ear. Typically two doses 3-4 weeks apart is enough to kill all the mites and correct the issues. I would try that before attempting to put medication inside the ear canal at this point. You will need to purchase it from a local vet. Over the counter "ear mite treatments" do not work.
