The Donskoy is a rare, hairless breed originally from Russia, cherished for its warmth and devotion to people. This breed loves to play, explore and cuddle, making them wonderful companions for families who enjoy an interactive, talkative cat. A common question potential pet parents ask is “are Donskoys hypoallergenic?” The answer is complex. While they shed less dander than coated cats, no breed is truly hypoallergenic. They thrive in environments where they can explore, interact and participate in daily routines.
Donskoys are medium-sized, muscular cats with wrinkled skin, large ears and striking almond-shaped eyes. Their hairlessness can range from completely bald to a light velvet-like fuzz, and they are frequently mistaken for the Sphynx despite having a different genetic origin. (That nickname of Don Sphynx sort of confuses the matter, but we’re just letting you know!) Their overall vibe is elegant, expressive and uniquely eye-catching. Often overlooked in the debate of Donskoy vs. Sphynx is that the Donskoy has a unique look all their own.

Donskoys require consistent attention to their skin, warmth and overall comfort. Because they lack fur, they rely heavily on their environment and human care to stay healthy. Daily affection, mental stimulation, warm resting places and a balanced, high-quality diet go a long way in supporting this social breed. They thrive in homes where someone is present most of the day and where they can participate in family life.

The Donskoy’s hairlessness is caused by a dominant gene, unlike the recessive gene found in the Sphynx.
This breed is known to sweat slightly through their skin, requiring gentle routine cleaning.
Donskoys often love heated beds and wearing sweaters due to their warmth-seeking nature.
The Donskoy is recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) but is not currently recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA). TICA granted the breed Championship status in 2005, helping increase their visibility worldwide.
The Donskoy originated in Russia in the late 1980s when a hairless kitten was discovered in Rostov-on-Don. (OK, now that Don Sphynx nickname starts to make sense.) Breeders began selectively developing the line and the breed’s unique dominant hairless gene became a defining trait. The Donskoy was later recognized by several international cat associations and gained a reputation for their striking appearance and affectionate, loyal temperament.
