Why is my new parrotlet breathing fast and not eating after meeting another bird?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parrot | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 11 days old

My 11 week old parrotlet has been with me for over a week now, but over the last hour after being introduced to my older bird, she has kept her head down and has rather quick breathing? She's also not eating when perched at her food bowl. Could she just be tired or stressed?

Thanks for reaching out about Penny. Stress can definitely lead to depression and inappetence. But so can illness. Most birds should be quarantined upon acquisition so they can be accessed prior to introduction to the other bird.
For now, provide supplemental heat to make her more comfortable. If she continues to be tired and not eat, a veterinary visit is needed soon.
Good luck.
