Newly hatched button quail chicks aren't eating. What should I feed?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. With very small chicks, you often need to grind up further the chick crumbles that you can buy from the feed store. I put some in a ziplock bag, & roll over them with a heavy rolling pin making the crumbles even finer. Feed this in a very shallow dish, changing it frequently if they soil it. Once they are bigger, you can use a chick feeding trough. This should be available to the chicks all day long. Water needs to be supplied using a small chick waterer making sure it is fresh every day. Good luck with your little chicks.

If your hen is free ranging, ie, can walk and eat wherever she likes, then she will teach her chicks to eat insects and seeds and grit and you will not need to add anything. If your chicken is in a coop and cannot take her chicks out to forage, then you need to buy either commercial baby chick starter food or feed them insects and worms and chopped greens. You can also feed them chopped boiled eggs. You can also mix finely chopped hard-boiled eggs with oatmeal ground lentils, ground maize, flax, millet. You can add worms and other insects. They will always need fresh water available.

Budgies will typically eat a portion of their own food, and then regurgitate it to the babies so it can be more easily digested by them. If the parents aren't feeding the babies, there are commercial baby bird foods available that when added to water, mix up into a slurry that is easy for the baby bird to digest (since we can't regurgitate to them!). As the babies grow and start to explore on their own, they will begin to eat the regular adult food as well.

As long as the parents are taking care of the hatchling themselves, you shouldn't need to do anything as they will keep it warm by laying with it in the nest, and feed it as needed. It also seems like you are feeding lots of nutrition-filled items to your birds as well! It is a good idea to have some baby bird food and a syringe on hand that you can mix up if you need to help with feeding, or if the parents aren't caring for it. Most pet stores carry this and will have feeding instructions on the side of the bag. Congrats on the baby bird! It sounds like it and its parents are in good hands.

Cuteness overload! Ducklings should be given access to enough water that they ate not going to run out. I would go to somewhere like tractor supply and pick up a water dispenser. This will help keep things sanitary. Diet wise a good chick starter feed should be sufficient unless you can find a duckling specific food. High protein at first is best like 20 percent or more. Consider adding something like brewer's yeast as well to the diet to cover additional vitamin requirements. If you end up keeping them for longer, their nutritional requirements will change.

If this is a wild bird the best option would be to get it to a wildlife rehabilitator asap. If a pet species you need to know what species in order to feed approriately. You need a hand rearing formula suited to that species. Keep in a "nest" with supplemental heat and humidity as it cannot regulate body temperature yet. Relative humidity greater than 50% is required initially. Hatchlings (no feathers) should be maintained at 95° - 97°F (35° - 36°C). An incubator is usually recommended for hatchlings. If the chick is 3-5 weeks old, he can be removed from the cage. Use an appropriate hand feeding formula and feed 2-3 times daily. The formula should be warm (not hot) as most chicks will refuse cold food. He should also be kept warm. A cold chick will not eat. By 7-8 weeks, he should be eating seed, pellets and other foods on his own.
